Ollie Robinson

Absolutely shocking from the ECB. They have simply thrown him under the bus. I imagine everyone has something they have tweeted or just messaged that they regret.

He whole heartedly apologised so I'm not sure what more he can do?

The most shocking part is the usual scumbag press. They decided to run the story during his international debut. How long have they had the information? Also how did the ECB not get wind of it? You'd think they do pretty in depth back ground checks.

It was clearly wrong of him to send these tweets. I just think he's apologised and we should move on.

He actually handled himself very well over the test as he must have known what was going to happen.

How old was he when he did this? 13? For goodness sake kids are kids and say and repeat whatever is in fashion without knowing what they are talking about.
In my era it was "Spastics" or Biafrans or anyone who was disabled. Yes I am ashamed of what I said but only because many years later I found out it was wrong, not acceptable and disgraceful. I made mistakes just like any other 13 year old..
He was 18-20 when he made the tweets.

I supsect they only found out after he got selected. They will have put some people on the case to investigate him because of the hype.

Is this why Yorkshire sacked him, or was that for another misdemeanor?
The guy does appear to have been an absolute knob in his early 20s, and not just your regular idiot, but a proper one. Yorkshire sacked him through "three serious breaches of club discipline, plus a number of minor repeated breaches". He wasn't even released, he was sacked.

I mean people in any job don't really get sacked these days, it's legally a very difficult thing to do, so the fact he got sacked tells you a lot about his behaviour at that time.

Maybe he's sorted himself out a bit, as he is now vice captain for his county and has been there 5 years after 1 failed year at Hamphire. Maybe he has realised that he couldn't continue that way.

On the surface this appears to be more than just a case of teenage immaturity, and hijinx, his behaviour seems to have been far worse than your average kid that age.

Give him his punishment quickly and appropriately then give him the opportunity to prove himself to have learned to be less of a prat.

Yorkshire sacked him for going back to Kent for the night during games not sleeping and returning at 1am for the next days play on more than 1 occasion. His punishment by ECB is very harsh but he didn't really help himself with his apology as he said that he was in a bad place due to his sacking by Yorkshire, but these rweets preceed that time. (Edit pre not proceed - blooming predictive text)

It does sort of support Rafiq's claim about the culture at Yorkshire during his time there though.

The tweets were all conversations with Kent people.

I guess that the argument is that an apology after being outed isn't really sincere or a punishment? But post appropriate punishment then he should be allowed to move forward with his life.
If apologising has no effect though, he might as well not bother.

I've seen the tweets, they're bad, but punishing a 27 year old for the actions of an 18 year old just seems silly. Its almost like it didn't matter that he was an idiot when he was 18 until he made something of his life, and now we have to ruin it for him. Why?

I'm not saying it has no effect, on its own it has the effect of seeming insincere though.

it carried on for a couple of years, are you saying that if you don't get caught being a massive racist within the first couple of years, then you should be free from any punishment for it. He isn't being punished for someone elses action but for his own. We all make mistakes in life, and we all have to live by our actions, I'm not a fan of statue of limitations, and I don't think being 18-20 year old qualifies as diminished responsibility.

He shouldn't be publicly crucified for ever though, but he has to show some sincerity in his failures as a person and some reparation for it. With cricket being a game shared amongst commonwealth countries and thus people of colour, it's quite important for him to now show a bit of sincerity and self reflection about his attitudes.

where have you got this from??
a) his behaviour getting sacked despite multiple warnings
b) his tweets

I don't know many non knobs who go around getting sacked at work, despite the amazing opportunity at their feet and despite their bosses sitting them down and reading them the riot act. I also don't know many non-knobs who act like massive racists in public.

He got “sacked” for turning up late multiple times after driving back from Kent after nights out with his mates.

hardly “absolute knob” behaviour for a 21 year tbf

No he turned up for work hungover with zero sleep and sometimes while driving dangerously back the length of the country.

I had plenty of work mates who would turn up a bit hungover. But to turn up with zero sleep, and hungover many times, that is knobbish behaviour. He basically was sabotaging his chances of performing at work, repeatedly despite warnings that it would lead to being sacked and he simply didn't care.

Don’t know the guy and don’t follow cricket but I do know that theirs a huge difference between 18 and 25+. The ECB do seem to have acted OTT, god forbid I’m ever held to task on my views or loud mouth self opinionated “ I know the World” attitude I espoused in my late teens.
We live and learn and a young( ish) player like this could have been used as an example of how foolish young people can be and how we can grow, rather than ( as has been said) threw under a bus.

Spot on.
I did loads of all nighters at uni then slept through lectures.

Would I do it now? No, probably not. Because, funnily enough, I’ve grown up a bit from when I was 20.
