Sadiq Khan re-elected as Mayor of London

I'm so glad he won, but yet again the polls overestimated Labours support
Not quite true. Polls had them “neck and neck” a few days before polling.

Also there was some underhand campaigning going on by a former Tory aide called the “Fair Tax” campaign which put out some untruths on social media In the election run up attacking Khan.

All three London mayors have been a good friend to property developers. Despite different politics, they have perpetuated the myth of 'affordable homes'. They don't have much else to do except appoint cronies ('night Tsar'?) and join any bandwagon that looks to be gaining momentum e.g anti-police re handling of illegal 'vigil', when police subsequently exonerated.

The other thing the Tories did was run a very last minute campaign blaming Kahn for all the knife crime in London having had it identified by You Gov as a key issue with voters, this is a common Tory tactic in election campaigns, identify what is popular at the death with the voters and then jump on the bandwagon. Labour could and should do more of that themselves.

It was interesting that the Major Sleaze slurs didn't work in Hartlepool though. They weren't worried that he was choosing £800 a roll wall paper and bodies were piling up in the thousands. I don't know what would horrify a populist electorate.

I suspect that those voters who are bothered about sleaze did not vote. There is a difference between not being happy about it and being so annoyed that it drives you into the polling booth.

The turnout was only 43%, meaning about 80% of the Hartlepool electorate did not vote for the Tory winner.

Tory vote share was 36% across these elections, well down from 45% in 2019, despite them being portrayed as some massive success for Johnson, so maybe the sleaze is starting to bite.

Why do people always say this, yes turnout is one factor but if a party wins an election they win the election turnout really isn’t a key factor at all.

our system is designed to all but eliminate turnout as being an issue they only fact they matter is those that do enter the polling booth not those that don’t.

this was thrown at thatcher that she never ever held a 50% share of the vote so ergo more people voted against her than for her but who cares she still ruled for over a decade. With all the ills that followed.

turnout means nothing and labour can’t take any comfort in the number as there is no guarantee the stay away would have voted for them.

I agree with you but my reference to the turnout and the number of actual votes cast for the Tory in Hartlepool was specifically in relation to the impact of Bunters sleaze and curtains problem. There will be plenty of people not happy with it but any impact will have been masked with so few bothering to turn out in Hartlepool.

I think you need more than Johnson being bent (which I think is just common knowledge now) to turn the floating voter towards Labour but I don’t think the Hartlepool result is an indication that it has not had any effect at all.

Guaranteed the next government will be formed with a majority that did not vote for them. Rejoice in that news.

Shaun Bailey is a scumbag too. I've just seen his concession speech. The state of politics in this country is abhorrent. No grace in defeat at all. Just attack attack attack. It's actually pathetic. It makes me sad that this is what the electorate like. Conflict and division rather than policy and caring about the people.

Yeah because Paul Williams Concession speech was so much better.
