What is on your top five list of places to visit and why? Now we are hopefully moving towards living with COVID and can hopefully begin to travel again (although with an eye on ensuring richer nations can make sure everyone has the choice to be protected via a vaccine) I’ve got the following...after having so much time to think about it. In no particular order.
Berlin. Been twice, for me it’s my favourite city. Not just for 5 days, the plan is to live there for 6 months at some point following retirement - I can’t explain why I enjoyed it so much, maybe the history, how friendly everyone else, the beer. It’s like an itch that has to be scratched.
Machu Picchu. Growing up in 70s and 80s Teesside, being obsessed with maps and seeing such amazing places planted a seed in my mind about travel. It’s location and significance add to the allure.
Bhutan. Looks beautiful, sounds great. Clouded leopard, Bengal tiger and tiger make it a hotspot for big cats. And a bit of the above as well.
Iceland. I like desolate landscapes, and with volcanoes, waterfalls and Sigur Ros there’s even more to attract me. A bit of hiking across glaciers and then relaxing in a hot thermal pool. Seeing the Northern Lights another plus.
Closer to home, walking the Cleveland Way. I’ve been thinking about this for a while and lockdown got me seriously contemplating it. The not so little one finishes college in 3 weeks and then has 4 months before uni, so I’ve convinced him to walk some sections over the summer - so not all in one go, but I’ll do it eventually end to end continuously as well.
