Travel Bucket List

What is on your top five list of places to visit and why? Now we are hopefully moving towards living with COVID and can hopefully begin to travel again (although with an eye on ensuring richer nations can make sure everyone has the choice to be protected via a vaccine) I’ve got the following...after having so much time to think about it. In no particular order.

Berlin. Been twice, for me it’s my favourite city. Not just for 5 days, the plan is to live there for 6 months at some point following retirement - I can’t explain why I enjoyed it so much, maybe the history, how friendly everyone else, the beer. It’s like an itch that has to be scratched.

Machu Picchu. Growing up in 70s and 80s Teesside, being obsessed with maps and seeing such amazing places planted a seed in my mind about travel. It’s location and significance add to the allure.

Bhutan. Looks beautiful, sounds great. Clouded leopard, Bengal tiger and tiger make it a hotspot for big cats. And a bit of the above as well.

Iceland. I like desolate landscapes, and with volcanoes, waterfalls and Sigur Ros there’s even more to attract me. A bit of hiking across glaciers and then relaxing in a hot thermal pool. Seeing the Northern Lights another plus.

Closer to home, walking the Cleveland Way. I’ve been thinking about this for a while and lockdown got me seriously contemplating it. The not so little one finishes college in 3 weeks and then has 4 months before uni, so I’ve convinced him to walk some sections over the summer - so not all in one go, but I’ll do it eventually end to end continuously as well.

Iceland - would love to go for the NL
Canada - really want to ski there
Chile (specifically Patagonia)
Tuscany- mainly for a wine tour
New Zealand - really want to go to Hobbiton

NZ top of my list but not because of Hobbiton. That’s a massive tourist ripoff my mates tell me. More for the reasons you give in the other places. Substitute NL for the Aurora.

There's only Japan really. Seems like a very 'alien' culture to that we know in the West. I'd really like to see first hand if the cleanliness and respect for others which you hear about is actually doable in this world.

Tbf there’s a load more I’d love to do there, but I do love the Tolkien word so think I’d be happy with it.

Saying that, I did look at the price for the banquet tour and it was extortionate, I think it worked out the same as going to Raymond Blancs restaurant but without RB.

Now Dooderooni has mentioned it Japan would be high on my list too, two lots of friends have been and loved it.

Closer to home I’d like to spend some significant time on the Scottish islands!

I was there for the Rugby WC. it was a sensational country to visit. Go as soon as you can.

If you like the Scottish highlands youd love the South Island of NZ. and as said above I would advise to avoid Hobbitton like the plague. Awful touristy place in one of the least interesting places NZ has to offer. If you are a fan of Tolkein then the South Island tour of the locations from Twizel infinitely better. NZ has everything from fantastic beaches, great mountains for skiing and the BEST wine tours. Oh and the coffee shop culture here is second to none. You can get to see the Southern Lights from The Caitlins and Stewart Island. Sounds a perfect fit.

The wine side of things definitely appeals, I’ve spent enough of Marlborough wines over the years, I should probably visit.

And skiing in winter would be something mid like to do.

Re Tolkien, I still think I’d have to visit the set. I’ve visited Tolkien’s grave and stop in the Eagle and Child everytime I’m in Oxford, so it feels like sacrilege if I didn't visit.

anyhoo this is all about nothing atm, we’ve got a house to buy and probably another couple of kids before I get anywhere near saying let’s go to New Zealand

I think if your going to travel to the Far East it’s. Good idea to try and visit a few places obviously it’s about hard to do if your committed to a 9-5 job

Fair enough if thats what you have to do one day. I only hope it survives for you as it attracts only overseas tourists so it has been practically dead this last 15 months.

The shire can never die, I envisage Samwise Gamgee has been working relentlessly for a sack of taters this past 15 months!

Japan for the food, drink and exploring Tokyo at night.
Russia, would love to explore the northern coastline.

My profile picture was taken in Japan, they have areal life Mario cart race on the streets of Tokyo. Just one of the many strange but seemingly normal things happening there. The food is great as are the sights. We went in cherry blossom season and it was fantastic. We will probably go again and try some coastal areas this time.

Nepal - Himalayas/Mount Everest, food and culture
Tibet - Who wouldn`t want to stand on top of the world, food and culture
India - food and culture
Japan - food and culture
North Korea - Want to view it in my own eyes and not how the Western Governments tell me

Singapore, hopefully I'll be going back there again at the end of the year. Absolutely my favourite place

New Orleans for Mardi gras

Another one for Iceland. It seems such a stunning place.

Seoul. Mainly for the kimchee

Somewhere totally crazy. Watching bald and bankrupt on youtube has made me want to visit the states of the former Soviet Union.
