"News" appears to be gathering momentum.
18 clean sheets - ended in a 3-1 victory at Plymouth Argyle.
Up until that point, he was in line for the covetted "Golden Glove" award.
Previously dropped by Johnson, then reinstated after two games as the no.1 goalkeeper.

Middlesbrough interested in third Sunderland player

Middlesbrough have previously been linked to Sunderland duo Jordan Jones and Charlie Wyke, but they also appear to be interested in a third player from the League One side.

The news that Middlesbrough have been linked to Jordan Jones and Charlie Wyke will no longer be strange to any Boro fans, but it seems the duo are not the only two players Boro are interested in signing from Sunderland.

Neil Warnock's side have now been linked to signing Black Cats' goalkeeper Lee Burge.

Burge's contract at the League One side expires this summer and Boro could be looking to make a move for him in the transfer window.

With the future of Marcus Bettinelli currently uncertain at Boro, as he is likely to return to his parent club Fulham, Boro will be in serious need of a reliable goalkeeper next season.

Middlesbrough will also likely not renew Jordan Archer's deal that will end this summer, and it means they will not have both their first and second choice goalkeepers next season.

Burge has played 39 matches for Sunderland so far this season, and he has kept 18 clean sheets. If Boro can get him, they will be getting an excellent goalkeeper for free. However, the Black Cats may also offer him a new deal to tie him to the club.

That's nearly half a team - decent feeder club.

Sunderland's better players have aspired to joining us for a while: Arca and McNair spring to mind, but even Kevin Philips wanted to come here.

In return, we've helped them out with the occasional kid, vetran or squad man like Downing, Coops and Fletcher.

The quetion remains, are their best good enough for us? Plenty will say Arca wasn't.

While Arca had some good spells he didn't do it often enough and had endless injury issues. It was a massive mistake by Southgate to let Rocky go while extending Arcas contract. Should have been the other way round. Rocky was good for Alves as he knew how to play to him.

Is 5’11” tall enough for a goalkeeper nowadays?
absolutely not, you need to be absolutely exception to be under 6 foot 2 and a decent keeper. There are very few under that height and the ones that are tend to drop clangers because of a lack of size, eg Pickford.

never bothered Steven Pears!
different game these days, he retired 25 years ago. His son is 6 foot 1 and people complained that he had no presence in the box. You should also watch our 88-89 season highlights and see just how many times he was done in the air, he was a liability that season.

How big was Shay Given? I always thought he was small.

I imagine the telling ability for this lad is can be kick? And kick quickly? 😂

I don't ever see Warnock wanting a keeper who's good with his feet. He hates all that playing out from the back and slams prem clubs he's watched doing it during pressers.

Given was 6 foot 1, had exceptional reflexes, but was vulnerable to crosses throughout his career.

Shortest keeper in Premier League history is............................. Victor Valdes at 6ft (along with Claudio Bravo).

Manual dexterity, skill and awareness are more important than height.(y)

Aynsley Pears was 185 cm.
Jason Steele 188 cm

Height doesnt equate with quality and skill.

I do agree it's a different game, players have got bigger, faster, stronger...the top keepers of days gone by that I rated like Shilton 6'0 Burridge 5'11 Cooper 5'11etc probs wouldn't do aswell in today's game.
Mind I think Shilton was the best I've seen at Ayresome, so he would still have done the business I'm sure...
I much prefer a big keeper 👍
