Middlesbrough interested in third Sunderland player [oneboro / The72 / Shields Gazette / H`Pool Mail]

of course they are, but as the old boxing saying goes, "a good big un will always beat a good little un"
For some strange reason the image of Aden Flint keeps coming to mind!!!
197 cm an not recommended.

There`s a saying [right or wrong] which goes "a goalkeeper is only as good as the defence in front of him".

I do agree it's a different game, players have got bigger, faster, stronger...the top keepers of days gone by that I rated like Shilton 6'0 Burridge 5'11 Cooper 5'11etc probs wouldn't do aswell in today's game.
Mind I think Shilton was the best I've seen at Ayresome, so he would still have done the business I'm sure...
I much prefer a big keeper 👍
I always felt Shilton was a little over rated. HE was good, but he was talked about as the best in the world and he was clearly nowhere near that. Apparently he had abnormally long arms which helped alleviate his lack of real height, gave him a bit more reach.

If you look at the greatest keepers in our memory: Buffon 6'4", Schmeichel 6'3", Seaman 6'3", Taffarel 6'0", Schumacher 6'1", Zubizarreta 6'2", Chilavert 6'2", Cech 6'5", Southall 6'1", Kahn 6'2", Zenga 6'2". The best 70s-80s keepers were 6'0" to 6'2". The 80-90s were 6'1" to 6'3", and now it's 6'2" to 6'5". It's following heavyweight boxing where dietary changes mean that players are getting taller as a minimum requirement to be able to compete.

Back to the original point, 5 foot 11 as a keeper was small even in the 80s, but it's career limiting in the modern game.

I thought Shilton was top class,
I stood behind the goal in the Holgate and Shilton's shotstopping, tipping over or round the post was incredible. Seem him pull off several saves I would call world class 👍🔥

I'm a little surprised by that list of heights though.

Sure, they're tall, but there's only a couple of real giants in there.

How big was Shay Given? I always thought he was small.

I imagine the telling ability for this lad is can be kick? And kick quickly? 😂

I don't ever see Warnock wanting a keeper who's good with his feet. He hates all that playing out from the back and slams prem clubs he's watched doing it during pressers.
5 foot 9 & an excellent keeper, for us too

Peter Shilton was an outstanding goalkeeper, the best English keeper of my life time in my opinion.

Seaman ran him close but for me Shilton at his peak was truly world class.

Got to say staggered Shay Given was 6ft 1,dont think Shay got the credit he deserved,he was another superb keeper.

If this is true we seem to be trying to rebuild a sunderland side that went down and could be heading for its 4th season in the 3rd division.
We need much better if we want to go up.

Saw him put in a world class performance for Stoke at A.P. One of the best games I have ever seen by a keeper. If I remember correctly it was a 0-0 draw which would put it in Jan 1977.

It's not all about height there has to be the strength of body and mind to go and attack the ball and take it in uncomfortable areas. For example, Gestede was a giant but was scared to properly challenge for the ball in the air and used to jump under the ball to avoid getting roughed up. His spring to get in the air was non existent and with a good spring you can make up for those few inches you're lacking in height.

Similar thing with keepers there has to be that toughness - I'm coming out into this mass of bodies to claim this one and I accept I might get hurt. Some have that mentality and also the ability to get real spring into their jump too with good bounce and timing and this can compensate for being a bit shorter. After all as a keeper no matter what your starting height, when claiming crosses you are as tall as you can jump with your arms outstretched.

Having said all of the above, I think seeing a big lad in goal gives everyone more confidence, the defence, crowd etc, but it's probably psychological and more about the actual keepers ability.

Always remember that game for the very reason my younger brother, awful weather & another NYD winless game at AP
Boro never won on NYD at AP in my lifetime

but if you are 6 foot 4 and have the strength of body and mind, you will always be better than someone who is 5 foot 11 with it. When we monitor players we look at the four corner model. Physical, technical, psychological and social. This is how every professional coach and manager looks at players, it's part of the UEFA and FA models. What you are saying is that physical is not important if they have a strong psychological sector, that isn't how a pro will look at it. They will see the lack in the physical quarter as a glass ceiling because you can't train someone to be taller.

I’m surprised no boot manufacturer has found a way of making a decent keepers boot to add a couple of inches ...........maybe I should re post this on April 1st 😆

I wasn't saying the physical side isn't important, I'm just saying that it isn't the be all and end all. Like you say its usually a four corner model and different attributes will feed into each of those four corners. Potentially, you can make up for deficiencies in one area with real strengths elsewhere which overall might level the playing field a bit.

I agree most people would want a bigger physically strong keeper, I'm just saying that people shouldn't completely right someone off based on one attribute.

Having said the above I know as much about this Mackem keeper as I do about the lifecycle of the Lithuanian locust.
