Our Top 5 Champ Midfielders (central)

I don't know what got me thinking it (probably Howsons masterclass), but while I was watching the game last night I started thinking who our top 5 centre mids have been since dropping down to the championship under Gareth.

I went with something along the lines of (in order):

1) Leadbitter
2) Howson
3) Barry Robson
4) Clayton
5) Mcnair

Thoughts? Have I missed anyone out or got them in the complete wrong order? 🙃

I think Saville might creep into there in a season or 2 if he keeps it up - and maybe Morsy in future.
 
I think Howson is best footballer out of the lot. If he achieves promotion with us this or next season he’s no 1 for me. Just think he’s a brilliant footballer. Would have Saville in there instead of McNair as McNairs best performances have been in defence and I think he may be realising himself now he’s better stepping out from the back rather than starting in midfield. Saville is starting to show what he’s about, although I’ve always been one of his defenders on here.
 
Would have been interesting to see how Robson did in a better team. Thought he was great at the time but may have been as much to do with the rubbish he was surrounded by. Agree Saville should be above McNair from a midfielder point of view. Really starting to show his value.

Surely De Roon deserves a place in there unless you aren't counting that season? Probably best to write it off to be honst!!!
 
Obi Mikel and Besic, in his first spell, both looked good players, I think Saville should be above McNair who has performed better in defence and shown what a good player he is.

Looks like Roberts is the continuing in the vein of Besic as players who have been disappointing in their second loan spells, Omeruo is another who springs to mind.
 
As good as Howson has been for the past season and a half, he was disappointing before that, so I'm not sure I'd place him above Clayton who was excellent for 2 seasons and integral in a promotion.

Saville is doing really well this season, 4 goals and 4 assists at the half way point. Hopefully he carries that form on in to the second half.
