Religious education in schools

So 'worship' and 'religion' are not interchangeable here. I think you've misunderstood my point. Also interesting that you doubt your fellow subjects of King Charles III ability to make up their own minds about things. Did you go to a Republican 'murder the Royals' school and are now unable to think differently?
No i went to a Catholic school so i know all about indoctrination
.

I fail to see how teaching children about various religious beliefs will somehow promote world peace or promote tolerance , your telling kids that
we have to respect people being stoned to death for being gay or whatever as something that is to be accepted or viewed upon as a cultural norm

Just teach confucius golden rule , do unto others as you wish to be done to you

Churches and mosques exist for worship so whatever religion you were brainwashed with go there, school is for basic education in maths and science etc ,

It isn't a numbers game as any death is an outrage, but you forget the millions sacrificed, and still being sacrificed, on the altars of Fascism and Communism
Who is promoting the idea of facism or communism here as an alternative, thats purely a strawman argument

To my mind it should be replaced with cultural / theological studies.
All the major religions of the worlds getting an even split in teaching time as part of 'they are just a theory '
Going to Catholic Schools in the 80's / 90s, and taught / told that my mam had sinned for divorcing a violent bully was mental really.
The more that religion and politics can be separated, the better.

If religion wasn't about brainwashing you'd have a nice balance of religious beliefs across most countries, instead of 90% Hindus in India, 96% Muslims in Pakistan, 87% Catholics in Italy etc.

Otherwise its a very strange coincidence how popular those beliefs are concentrated in those places.

I attended a RC school and I never had any religion taught to me at senior school, it was more a chat about things in life and there wasn't an exam taken although my kids went to the same school and did.
I was never taught any at home from my parents that I can remember tbh, perhaps off my female cousins.
All the indoctrination happened during primary school years, it was quite intense.
Each to their own and I wouldn't ban their schools.

I find religion divisive and very difficult to believe, to me it is woo woo, like - ghosts, good Tories etc, smart Americans, God hates gay people and most denominations in religions despise gay people!! etc.
I wouldn't offend a religious person as people have all kinds of beliefs.
The exception I have difficulty with is in fact is this christo flat earth stuff, the sun is only 6000 miles away and the earth is 5000 years old, its a good job there aren't any nearby blancmange ray guns when I hear it.

I'm an atheist as is my wife. Our children have freedom to make their own mind up but don't get any influence from myself or their mam.

I think I would prefer that Religious Education was changed to something along the lines of Religion and Cultural Awareness and was taught throughout their school life.
Where an understanding of different religions but also different cultures was taught. Not everyone comes from a background where this will be spoken about in positive manner at home. No need to confine it to different religions. Why not extend this to different cultures?

No, the straw man was blaming religious wars for loads of deaths, without the counterpoint that once Man rids a country of the disgusting indoctrination that is religious belief, Man gets even more savage with Man based on the secular beliefs they then replace the religious beliefs with. This Utopian ideal of a world without religion is unattainable, but it hasn't stopped plenty of truly evil people from showing us all what actually happens when we try it.

And yet you display a remarkable ability to think for yourself that has freed you from this indoctrination. Almost as if indoctrination isn't a problem. Unless you yourself are uniquely placed to rid yourself of it and none of your fellow men are?

No religion - any religion in schools!!

I went to Catholic school and even in your first year there you are on a fast track to

Me too - I never really thought about what "Catholic Guilt" was until fairly recently and how it has played a part in my life. Confess your sins when your are 6 or 7 (first confession) - do me a favour!!!

But I would say that your fundamental error there is to equate all religions as equally false. Your argument also suffers from the fact you are making it. I could say that you are only making that argument because of where you were born.

We are built to worship, so think about what you place your highest value on, and generally that is what you are worshipping. I choose to worship the God who sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, to save me (and the rest of mankind) through the Church he established. Plenty of people have and always will worship other gods, some choose to worship other people or material things. That won't stop because RE is taught differently (or not at all) in schools, it is a fundamental urge in all of us.
We are risen apes not fallen angels. Built to worship.?!?! You "chose" Jesus Christ.?? So there are more than one then. . Me? Ill choose the mouse in a Teapot thanks.
You can keep the one with pedophile priests, Spanish inquisitions, special agreements with Hitler , childhood Cancer and ultimately the guy responsible for the sh*t show we find ourselves in.

Many hate crimes are perpetrated based on ignorance regarding religion. These range from the belief that Jews drink the blood of children in the middle ages, to the more modern belief that Islam fundamentally promotes terrorism.

Such beliefs are based on ignorance; surely more ignorance is not going to help matters?

If schools don't teach comparative religion, you hand power to those who will exploit ignorance to stir up hatered.

I'm not religious, but I am a pragmatist, and religion exists. We therefore have to deal with it. We cannot ignore it and hope it will go away.

Sorry , didn't realise that you are taking the P.
You have the floor pal.

Why does God have death? If its an outrage???
So the Catholic understanding is that Man was not meant to die. Death entered the world with sin, and all mankind since (with 2 exceptions) have continued to contribute to the brokenness of the world in this respect.

RE when I was at school was very much just learning about all religions.

Parents sent their kids to Sunday school if they wanted them to be indoctrinated (or if they just wanted a quiet Sunday nursing a hangover)
I went to a Catholic school and we learnt about most of the worlds major religions and did projects on them all - Hindu, Sihk, Islam,Judaism, Shinto IIRC. Nothing to in-depth as we were only around 9 years old.

So my Church is made up of sinners, that is true. However I believe I am making my way back to the God who loves me, who is Love. I was created for a purpose, and my ultimate purpose is in Him. Angels are also created beings, but separate from Man, and if you want to think that you are an improved ape that's entirely up to you 😀 but I would ask you to consider who has told you this and why you choose to believe it?
