That goal was never offside - onside off the initial shot - then off the Leeds player.

Yes, it can.
If it wasn't a deliberate action from the opposition, you're still offside.
There's a whole long section of the offside law describing exactly what situations count for that.

His argument was that you can't be offside if it comes off an opposition player, you very much can be.
