Gorgeous George player/coaching role (play if needed) or 1 year deal or get rid?

I would definitely find a role for him at the club and give him a playing contract to play if required.
Not just sentiment, top bloke who obviously cares deeply for the club and we just seem to be lacking a lot of people like that at the moment.
Thats if he wants it, he might think its time he went back to being a farmer.
Anyway thanks for the memories George, hope there is a lot more to come.

Top bloke is George, when he came to Roundel quiz he just kept his head down, but was willing to talk to anybody who approached him - even the Mackem quizmaster (who wanted a selfie). I know this is not a reason for giving him a contract, but I can't think of one instance where he has caused the Boro any problems during his time here.

Lovely bloke, great servant, top human being. The sort of fella you would want your daughter to marry. However, you can not create jobs just because of that. Our club has for too long gone down the jobs for the boys route.
I would thank him, welcome him back anytime he wishes to do the half time draw and future players dinners etc but no contract as a player or coach just because he is George. Coaches should be appointed by the manager for me.

I wish George all the best though. A few more like him would not go amiss in future years.

Player/Coach role if he has his badges, he's a very intelligent lad and is one of the most positive people at the club. I think players would respond well to him in a coaching role, but I still think he has the ability to play where needed. he could be a great ambassador for the club for many years.

I'd also happily see the club support him in getting his badges, let him use our facilities, shadow the manager, get involved with the youth team etc if that's what he wants to do.

But completely agree. We should be appointing first team staff on merit, not because they're ex-players. By all means keep an eye on his career and if he proves himself as a COACH (what the did as a player is irrelevant) of the required level then fine, you might bring him back on merit.

Don’t know why but I don’t really see Friend going into coaching for some reason, I could be well off. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him pop up on BBC Tees in a couple of years and become the new Neil Maddison, that type of role may suit him and I do believe he has an interest in media work.

He's got a degree in sports broadcasting and journalism so how about a non football role at the club using that ?

This is why BBC Tees suits him as he is still close to the club.

He'd certainly have some interesting insights I'm sure. Is it 8 managers he's played under for Boro? (if you count Venus).

I don't mind Maddo, but would be interesting to have someone from a more modern era. Things have probably changed a lot since Maddo was playing.

Totally agree. Think it totally suits him and like you say, it would be interesting listening to is thoughts on recent past managers and players etc.

I love reading this site. Gone from being a player coach to expert summariser on BBC TEES :ROFLMAO:

With a degree in sports broadcasting I would expect slightly higher ambition than being Madisons replacement on local radio but i'm sure he will be pleased you've all got him sorted :)

I agree with above, I think he has a few years left somewhere too.

Did hear from someone who knows someone that he was going to be offered a 2 year player coach roll but that photo of him sat alone at the Riverside tells me different.

Read somewhere on another post that its not all about ability but commitment, team spirit and even togetherness of the squad. Surely George is something of a roll model in those departments. Plus if we are not going to be able to make the wholesale changes some want in a few short weeks before the start of the new season. We are going to have to keep players and George can cover a couple of positions and is one of those I would keep.

Would be a good starting point for him though and a foot in the door at the BBC. Just a suggestion , I wasn’t setting in stone George Friends career path.

If he has the right qualifications and would help improve our players then absolutely, but we need to move away from this "jobs for the boys" culture. Isn't Gibson still trying to shoe horn Woodgate into a role somewhere?

He's only 32. He'll want to keep playing. He's got the rest of his life to go into coaching/media etc. I expect he'll end up in league 1 or maybe at a team just promoted

Yes, I think whatever we think of him he's got just as good, if not better memories of his time here, he did tell us, similar to the royal navy advert, brought up in Devon, but now a converted Teessider smoggy
Yes he'll stay within the game in some capacity but forever in our hearts, as we are in his
Just as I didn't want Mogga to manage the Boro I don't want George & manager in the same breath

Thanks for the memories George👍
