Will Tory @#×@ get the message from voters ?

ULEZ was introduced by Johnson when he was Mayor of London.

Seems weird to me that Uxbridge would vote for the Tory candidate based on a dislike of a policy introduced by their previous Tory MP when he was Tory Mayor 🤷‍♂️
Because Khan in his lack of ‘reading the room’ and wisdom expanded the ulez charge to outer London thus he’s to blame but he’ll keep on digging a hole for himself

What are labour going to do different the conservatives are a waste of space but I don’t see the labour offering anything different. Are they going to tax the big companies reduce my bills ??
We all sincerely hope that Labour will readdress the inequality of big business like banks literally shafting the English public and the thick English public just let them without a murmur

I had a feeling Labour wouldn't win in Uxbridge. Tories successfully made it a referendum on ULEZ.

Starmer did nothing to prevent that either, they asked him several times and he refused to answer the question as to whether he supported the scheme and eventually began distancing himself from Khan
I think this was a difficult one for starmer. He can't control Khan and distanced himself from the policy because it was clearly a vote looser.

Was that the right thing to do? In by election, probably not. He will get another crack at this seat shortly. By then ulez will have been foisted on the folks of uxbridge.

Starmer, rightly or wrongly, is attempting to make every decision through the prism of the next election. Its very calculated and cold and its why so many dislike him. However he has to work in a skewed environment. If Labour announce an uncoated pledge is hammered in the tory press. The tories have done this twice in the last couple of weeks and not a word from news media outlets. He is terrified of being accused of fiscal irresponsibility. I know its a joke but its the reality of the British electorate. Right now the tories can't attack Labour on anything and stranger wants to keep it that way. If the tories get in at the next election you can say goodbye to the NHS, you can say goodbye to the 100 thousand people that will die whilst the tories push ever more people into abject poverty and goodbye to any real chance of changing how we live in this world and respect its ecosystem.

It's really that important. Starmer recognises this, I believe. And I say this as someone who doesn't particularly like him.

The Tories receiving the message isn't the problem. They know full well the electorate have had enough of them.

The problem is they simply do not give a ****.

The right thing to do would be to call a GE asap (they used to be quite big on "will of the people" funny that) but they'll be keeping their grubby little mitts on power as long as possible while they continue to asset strip the country and pursue what's effectively a scorched earth policy so labour inherit a mess and they can moan about it in opposition.

Still what about those boat people eh?

The 'white' migrants are escaping a war in Europe & travel through a managed administrated system.. & have somewhere designated for them to be housed..

Many of the boat migrants are little more than economic migrants, & do not help the real migrants - also that majority seem to be single adult males, doesn't help their cause.
Oh I am gonna be unpopular here 🤣

It isn’t seen as de rigueur to highlight such things as some on here will have you categorised in all sorts of boxes that aren’t true, but I agree with you. The sheer volume of males that are crossing rather than families fleeing war is not going to stop, Climate change will help continue the trend, the more that stay, the more will be encouraged to keep coming.

Getting a routine GP appointment 4 years ago meant ringing up and getting a routine same day appointment, now, it is awaiting a non medic noting your personal bodily matters (hopefully correctly) a medic of sorts then triaging someone elses notes that may not always convey the issue accurately and then awaiting a call from a GP in roughly 4-5 weeks if it is deemed non life threatening. Migrants (i am told) are somewhat fast tracked in certain surgeries as they are in part incentivised by contract according to a local GP’s wife.

Some areas, the balance of males and females will be ‘increasingly strained’ the assumption that they are all fleeing war and persecution is for the birds. This imbalance will only lead to further issues in time. They often lose their passports and other I.D’s en route and on arrival many seem to adopt false narratives to play the system. This is unfair to those genuinely needing our help fleeing wars etc. We have to find a way to deal with this fairly not just for migrants but our indigenous population. To take a stance of open borders is going to increase poverty, strain public services, housing and create hate speech and further right wing fervour it is simply too much of a strain on our economy. I appreciate the need to help where we can, we must where reasonable, but we need to accept that our own poor and more vulnerable citizens are suffering as a result. I get the impression (maybe wrongly, maybe not) that many on here who are taking the moral high ground are reasonably well off and as such wont be always as impacted as say many lower down the salaried scales.

I will finish by saying my part solution is to use our Embassies abroad as posts where asylum has to be claimed, processed and decided before travelling to the UK, but that would need agreements and brexit has not helped, it has made it worse and where is the incentive for other countries to play ball? We are sleep walking into a position where civil unrest will become regular for future generations If someone does not get a grip. Some small part of the migration is on record as being actively encouraged by certain other countries to destabilise. We need to help and do our bit, not be a welcome doormat for anyone that wants to come. However, I don’t feel any political party is brave enough to tackle it as it is becoming almost impossible to do without being seen as extreme.

You should all be voting for the Green Party if you want to save the planet for your grandchildren !
Record temperatures across the world, floods and famine is what we have to look forward to if massive changes aren't made NOW...
Take your heads out of the sand and concentrate on the real and only issue !!!

The main thing I want them to do is just be boring and competent.

The current lot seem to think governance is performative art where shouting out what you're going to do is more important than actually doing it.

They got their migration bill through and passed into law so that they can 'stop the boats'. The thing that law doesn't do is provide any way of stopping the boats.

Agree with all of that.

I'm also no fan of Starmer but I understand what he's trying to do.

Labours weakness is the economy. It shouldn't be, certainly not after everything we've been through the last 13 years. But too many in this country are brainwashed on that.

To the extent that after Kamikwasi and Truss, hard brexit, cost of living crisis etc polls suggest Labour are still only just ahead of the Tories on "trusted with the economy". It's absolutely bonkers, but that's the reality.

I'm certain the data is telling labour they can't be bolder on spending at this point. The Tories are desperate for them to be so they can go hard at it in the run up to the election. They know a lot of voters are almost programmed to believe labour are reckless on that front.

It's frustrating as hell and there are compelling arguments that they're being overly cautious. But it's understandable why they're taking that position. And they need to win or we really are ****ed.

Starmer is watering down all labour policy so even when they get in nothing much will change. But it's ridiculous that with Greece in fire 50 degree temperatures in Italy etc that a climate change policy to help reduce pollution and clean up Londons smog. Has resulted in the Conservatives holding on

You don’t know that of course.
He wants to win - that’s for sure, and he won’t announce anything likely to distance wavering voters.
What he does in power is the acid test

Your part solution has been specifically rejected by the current UK government. France offered them the chance to do this and we have 7 Consulates plus the Embassy in Paris where this could be done. Brexit is only part of it in that we can't send people back under the Dublin agreement.

Might be cynical but my view is that this particular mob in power like this problem because it triggers their perceived voter base. They get to pretend they're doing things to solve the problems they encounter but blame others for stopping them.

They are helped by a complicit and frankly stupid media (check out The Express inflation headline) who get the readership and clicks from pedalling the same stuff.

All of the larger West European countries have an asylum problem. However nothing this government has done is designed to solve this.

Great post - Starmer also has the written ‘ultra right wing’ press waiting for a labour economy numbers slip up to hammer labours credibility because the media know how gullible the English public are.

Yeah I know and this government are in ostrich mode on everything. I genuinely think they know Labour will be in power soon and are deliberately stoking up problems that will make it so difficult for Labour that they think the electorate will welcome them back in 2029. The trouble is I am not convinced Labour know what to do on this subject either.

Other than just process people more quickly there isn't anything.

Labour lost out on Uxbridge due to a scheme introduced by Boris Johnson and widened at the request of Grant Shapps to secure further TFL funding.

The Tory candidate then ran a gaslighting campaign blaming Khan for it all. Typical Tories, legislate something, then campaign against it.

The worring part is the number of people that believe it.

Labour pulled back a fairly healthy majority to within 500 votes. But it allows the Tories to concentrate on this close result, not surprising that it seemed to a given it would be a Labour win.
None of the parties have a clue on how to tackle the problem of pollution in London.
Even TFL said Ulez would have minimum impact on the levels

Other than just process people more quickly there isn't anything.
It isn’t just about the processing of decisions though as every negative decision will be appealed and appealed looking for the slightest loophole, lawyers will be minted at the taxpayers expense. A new Labour government can and should look at processing abroad it will probably mean throwing yet more money at France (and others) way, but probably cheaper in the long run to do so.
