Ryan Giles

This was my point. We have Giles who has excellent delivery but it rarely results in goals.

We had McNair taking corners in the last 2 which is ridiculous when he was one of the few with any height. He should have been in the box.

We tried a season of having giants that win headers with Flint and Ayala and our goals from set pieces went down even though we had twice as many due to the long throw*.

I was just reading an article on how the number of goals scored from corners have gone up in the PL because teams have dedicated set piece coaches now. Maybe that's the sort of signing we need to make in the summer.

*Just reminded me how I don't miss watching us in those days!
Yeah if we're sticking to this style (which I want us to) we need to give up on high corners and crosses, I've not looked at the stats on that but it won't be a percentage play for us, so we need to come up with some other ideas.

Sadly I think we have seen his lst game in a Boro shirt. I expect him to be bench warming back at Wolves next season. He’s been a success with us and I’m glad we had him for one season.

Listening to radio tees whilst at match and the had touch line reporter who, when coventry scored said Giles was blaming himself, Carrick told him to get it out of his head and get back to his job, could simply be blaming himself for the loss

We didn't get him enough of the ball in the first half especially, and every time we did we were a massive threat. Didn't get enough in the box when he did get it too, but one of those could have fell for us, it just didn't.

We kept putting the ball down the right, and Smith was having a mare (or just not at that level), Forss didn't get a kick as Smith was a dead end.

Not easy last night though when they can have so many behind the ball and closing up space, need really good footballers to be able to deal with that.

Yeah, might have been, not good enough (in that department), not compared to what other teams had.
Can't remember who was taking our corners but we had Downing, McNair, Howson, Tavernier, Leadbitter, Besic and Wing in the team/squad. Should have been good enough to pick out Ayala and Flint (Shotton was on long throws).

I can't work out why we don't score many from set pieces. Giles has excellent delivery but never seems to be great at taking free kicks and corners. Barlaser is the same. We're just rubbish at getting on the end of things. Lenihan does get to a lot of crosses but the ball just bounces off him, he must have a weird shaped head.

For the life of me, I can't understand why we didn't try a single short corner or set piece routine across the two legs of the playoff when that's exactly what broke them down on the last day of the season.

Our aerial presence without Crooks in the team is nil. We actually (unusually) whipped a few decent balls in the box from corners last night but we're too easily defended.

Good player but his form has dipped for me seems to have been stuck on 11 assists since February.
He has but that ball he put across the face of the goal at the start of last night's game should have been converted, and there's been others similar of late.

The strikers' inability to get on the end of good crosses of late shouldn't always be down to those providing the ball.

Luton’s set pieces are superb ,they attack the ball with power ,we seem to standstill or attack with a short run and are blocked or nudged off the ball .

Hard to tell what Giles valuation should be - only Wolves will know. I would pay 4-6M, but not sure we can afford that. He's had a good season at Boro. Shame it didn't result in the promotion we all wanted. Big summer of change, but hopefully we'll be in the mix again next season - expect us to be.

I've been thinking about this as well. Came too a similar figure to you, around 4/5 mill with potential addons

Comments here on the BBC Tees Facebook page, appears to be his dad. Make of it what you will.

Amazing club, manager, staff, and amazing fans!!!!!!!
Middlesbrough have put Ryan on the map and we can't thank them enough. UTB ❤️

I also noticed Giles made a real point of waving to the fans in the North stand and touched the badge. Did feel like a goodbye to me.

I wonder if he'd already been told that we wouldn't be able to afford to re-sign him if we don't get promoted, or whether it's because he wants to make a real effort to try and fight for his place at Wolves.

At the end of the day though, if Wolves don't feel he's good enough for their first-team they will look to either loan him out again or sell him. Would love to have him back in on loan next season.
