Face masks

Which country is it?
Austria
It can't be. Read the graphs. There's a clue in the non-sensical title.
Ah so because it's not one of your graphs or Billy's it doesn't count? The stat is there plain as day.

Believe it or not but this place the only place where people are doing their own research and compiling figures.

😉

Here is a graph for the Netherlands for example where mask use is only mandatory on public transport and has been since May.

I'm sure there are success stories regarding masks but that strategy isn't the only one that works, not the be all and end all.

Fast forward a few months into early winter when vitamin D levels are lower, colds, coughs and flu start circulating again and we probably don't have a Covid-19 vaccine still. Does anyone think that masks and good hygiene wouldn't be an effective arm of preventing the number of infections?
Having people coughing and spluttering around you while Covid-19 is still out there won't be good for anyone's mental health. Plus, as the common cold and flu lower your immune system it'll likely make you more susceptible to Covid-19 infection.
We might not see a spike or second wave, but preparing for it might be a decent idea and better than just risking it and finding that we've acted too late as we did at the start of this pandemic.

Face masks a success in Austria
90% drop in cases

Also, the second graph you previously put up is nonsense. You might as well as have R calculated from cows with purple spots as it would have made as much sense.

Well we are having them as compulsory in shops - so it's a good idea to start getting used to using one.

Why?

Folk who don't want to wear them will just order online instead.

All about freedom of choice which everybody is entitled to.Everybody can be happy one way or another.

I notice it is from the 24th July, why not straight away? Also doesn't set a time for when they won't be mandatory. Will be interesting to see if police chase non mask wearers instead of say drug dealers or thieves. ,😶

My issue, at the moment, is that there doesn't seem to be a lot of hard evidence to support the wearing of face masks.

Did you not read the Oxford University study, published just this week, that I mentioned earlier? It looked at the latest data and evidence from all around the world and it says that, based on all the available information they could find:
The evidence is clear that people should wear masks to reduce virus transmission and protect themselves

Fuller information on the link below, including a link to the actual study.

At last common sense has prevailed and this, frankly bemusing, argument can end.
Not sure why we have to wait two weeks for it to be mandatory though? Is that so Cummings mates can get a mask supply chain in place? Or have we negotiated a world beating transition period with the virus so it won’t infect us for two weeks?

I suspect the delay may be so people can order face masks for those who do not already own one. It would be nice to see supermarets having a supply and a disposal point also, but I am not sure that will happen.

I may be wrong here, but a couple of weeks ago when I was looking into the benefits of wearing a face mask, the evidence was all over the place and contradictory.

Some evidence suggests they may actually increase the spread of any infectious disease.

I asked this question on another face mask thread. How are masked to be disposed and who is responsible for their collection and disposal?

With no infrastructure in place we will just be loading waste bins with covid petri dishes

Asia has controlled the virus pretty well compared to Europe. One has a culture of wearing masks the other doesn’t

Wearing masks doesn’t make sense if you don’t have to wear them in a pub. Your actually sitting around people for longer. We haven’t wore them in supermarkets and the r number hasn’t gone up since lockdown, so why now?

So why now? To prevent the R number going up. Also consensus of opinion is that with winter coming along the infection rate will likely go up so best now to start and prepare to make sure when that happens we are in the habit and culture shift to protect people. I do agree about pubs and restaurant though. There is inconsistency.

For those who haven't been to a supermarket lately, I suspect that the delay in the mandatory date is to allow shops time to secure their own mask supplies.
I do our weekly shop on my way home from nights and Morrisons is 50% shoppers and 50% staff fulfilling the internet orders.
You couldn't enforce a mask policy if the shops themselves were not in a position to protect their own staff.

It will kill a lot of shops back off, mis guided attempt by the government to try and encourage those weary of shopping to get out and shop but it will put off more.

Mixed data on benefits of wearing a face covering. All depending on what agenda the people putting it together have. They basically don’t stop anything other than large water droplets as vapour and the virus go straight through uninhibited. Even the 3 or 5 ply masks of which there is a massive variance in quality, it won’t take long before they are saturated and every breath is blowing concentrated water vapour and potentially the virus through them. Too many numpties won’t use them as throw away product and will re use over and over again. Those that do use them as disposables will be causing a massive negative environmental impact. Safe distance is way more important than wearing a face covering. I have a sneaky feeling one or two of the governments friends have a tonne or 2 of masks they want rid of that haven’t been bought.

Wife reckons the supermarkets had become a free for all, this might calm things down.

She is right to perceive that. My recent visits to the supermarket have definitely seen shoppers reverting to normal - reaching past you to get to stuff, stopping is the middle of aisles to chat or sort out their trolleys etc. A few weeks ago the queue to get in was a respectful 2 metres but now its like a Holgate squeeze in the queue sometimes and definitely families have returned to the shops in groups of 2-4.

Thing is Priv pick cold up and you have to self isolate until tested, and so does everybody who comes into contact with. Masks and hand washing make sense.
It's as simple as that. Masks make sense. It's why I'm genuinely bewildered by the people arguing against them. Both the amount of people and the vehemence with which they are arguing.

Like I said earlier, it's so simple to see for yourself: just try fogging a mirror with a mask on. That SHOULD teach you all you need to know about how it's stopping water vapour, which is what the virus is carried on.

It's also airborne too, don't forget that please. Just so people use the right judgment when our and about.
