Footballer values don’t work the same way they used to as no Premier League side has to sell. The best way to think about it is what he is worth to us. In the Championship he’d certain be worth another loan, but I doubt he’d be worth more than £2 million of a £8m budget. To a premier league team he might be worth triple that, but could you find an alternative of similar quality for £6m or so? Probably if your looking in the right places.
agreed prem sides only sell for a couple of reasons:
1 - a bad apple or player causing bad vibes because he's nowhere near first team
2 - to go on a big investment splurge
3 - players contract running out so recoup value
4 - player is nowhere near prem ability
Archer:
1 - The only reason we have him on loan is that he couldn't get a game in the first 6 months. I'd guess he had plenty of loan options in the summer, but chose to stay with Villa. He obviously wouldn't be happy to go back to villa and sit on the bench for 6 months then go back on loan to the champ. so I think that would be in our favour to get him.
2 - Villa haven't troubled the top half of the table recently, in fact it's 12 years since they finished in the top half. They need to invest in some high quality attacking players to really threaten teams. They're a bit like us when we had Nemeth, Job and Masimo, OK at the back, do enough to keep away from danger but lacked a bit of threat. To go up another level they need to sign 3x 30-40m forwards. It's unlikely that Archer can reach that level without 2 years playing in the prem, and he won't get it at villa right now. So they might sell, but only at a premium to fund big signings. Selling Archer to us for 15m might fund half of a big name CF for them.
3 - Contracted for 4 more years. What the hell did his agent do, hampered his options.
4 - he isn't yet, but looks like he could do well in a bottom 8 side now and push on with some experience.
With that 4 year contract, there is no way we get him on the cheap. Villa can keep loaning him out. Of course in his head at some point he will want some permanency.
With Giles, the noises are that he is nowhere near Wolves first team. Younger players in the same position. Wolves again need to raise money to invest and move away from the bottom. This summer will be the point they can maximise his value as he has 2 years left on his contract. He is unproven in the prem and the noises are that he is sick of being farmed out, and wants that permanency now. Should be avail and the discussions will be around 5m if in the champ or 8m in the prem.....but they'll play silly sods and start discussions much higher.
