Boro form

I wanted to put into some sort of context just how good results have been since Carrick took over, so I decided (as I like to do quite frequently!) to get comfy and spend some time on the 11v11.com historic results site.

My findings were that the results of his 1st 17 league games in charge are right up there with any 17 league game run at any point in our history (give or take) which is all the more remarkable considering it's his 1st 17 games in charge!

What fascinated me even more is that if you drop his 1st game (Preston loss) from that and look at his last 16 league games as a streak, it equals the best 16 league game run that I could find at any point in our entire history, which was during our 1926/27 promotion season (13 wins, 1 draw, 2 defeats)! So in isolation of those games, he has bettered any similar length run that even the likes of Rioch and Charlton could muster up (although their records over full seasons etc were obviously outstanding).

So take time to bask in this and appreciate just how special what we're witnessing is, as it's effectively never been any better. And it's made all the better by the quality of the football being played too. This goes out especially to the fan I had the pleasure of sitting near on Saturday, who saw fit to berate the team from the 3rd minute onwards & was happily slating Barlaser at the precise moment he put his ball in for Akpom's goal!!!

Great post, our form is unprecedented isn't it.

Yet some poeple still find room to criticise - just enjoy it while it lasts, because there's nothing as certain as it wont.

Dear father, were you sat in the north stand, block 21 close to the back? Some joker was berating barlaser for a blocked cross, when he put that header on a plate for chuba, for a debut he did well, oh for the numptys to appreciate football for what it is and not a computer game when we beat allcomers 5nil

No I'm in the family zone with my 6yo son. It's a regular occurrence as well, but to fair we had a laugh together after this one as the comic timing was superb!

I said to my lad (1st season ticket season) after the 0-0 draw with Rotherham to try and remember that feeling of disappointment, because you'll be able to say you were there when things were bad when things turn good again and it'll make the good times feel even sweeter. Don't think either of us expected an upturn quite as remarkable as this though!!

It's funny you say to bask in the moment but I find it quite hard to do so! It's only when it's gone you appreciate what you had etc..
The low crowds for some of our Uefa cup games used to wind me up - there was this blasé sense of Uefa cup football being completely normal and disposable to us, when I was thinking this is what we've all wished for and could be a once-in-a-lifetime type event!

block 21 - my old territory

I have a guy sitting near me .. he's absolutely unreal .. every game, finding something to moan about .. Given our form, given we've gone from 21st to 3rd and threatening 2nd since Carrick came in .. as pointed out - the best run of form for nigh on 100 years if the OPs analysis is correct ..

2 minutes in on Saturday and he's had 8 moans .. this player doing this .. that player doing that .. the way we're playing .. the slow build up .. passing out from the back .. 8 moans in the first 2 minutes ..

So I decided this week to count every time I heard him moan ...

I went down the concourse and watched injury time on the monitor on the 89th minute .. and by then he's made 84 moans .. nigh on 1 a minute ..

Its a symptom of the format though imo. The group stages weren't exciting in the least (and still aren't). I know we had a few good wins in them (notably against Lazio) but the format just didn't create any drama.

True, although the home gates Vs Sporting (last 16) and Basel, which after all was a QF, being around the 24k mark felt a bit shameful.
Yes looking back that is shameful. I know we sold out v Steaua but it was only hours before the match I think.

Back then I used to just think of us as an established PL club, and that we'd probably be in and out of Europe and win the odd bit of silverware. When we won the Carling Cup it felt like the beginning, not the end.

That 1996-2006 period was incredible in the context of the club's history though, with 5 finals, a cup and two top 10 finishes (only had 6 in total since the war). Can't say I don't miss those days but you're right, not sure I appreciated them so much at the time.

Yes, he had the best starting record of any Boro manager after a comparable amount of games. Given how Charlton started in 73 and Robson in 94 that’s some achievement.

Given also our only draw in this run was v Bristol City at home , MC's 3rd game in control , and we produced 23 goal attempts with 9 on target , their keeper having a worldie to save 8 shots. I think everybody at the time was , "how have we not won that, how have we come away from that without Carricks first home win". So, could easily have been another 2 points on the total.

Ditto with a couple sat near me on Saturday, absolutely clueless.

Constantly criticising our play at the back, completely unaware of what we were trying to do. First time they have a (semi) valid point as QPR's backline stood firm, next time they pushed up 10 yards, next time we went from front to back in about 3 seconds and Archer was clean through.

Still, we should "stop messing about with about it" :ROFLMAO:

That’ll be the xM statistic

You've got to be impressed with his consistency and stamina though. The Robbie Mustoe of booboys.

Unfortunately there are still some out there who want dinosaur football.

In fairness we were 2-0 down from the 1st leg against Basel and there had been a lot of matches that season. We'd just had a FA Cup QF replay etc.
