This is really worrying. After the Elphicke thing and now this. Labour are going down the same bigoted, xenophobic route as the Tories. Find a scapegoat, in this case asylum seekers, and make them the problem you have to "fix" instead of actually vowing to fix the real problems this country has. Man how did we become such a backwards country?

Smugglers and asylum seekers are as different as drug dealers and drug addicts, they are not to be confused.
 
He didn't really say that. He said they would take a counter terrorism approach to dealing with the people smugglers.

He says “I have no doubt that the British people fully support a rules-based asylum system. No doubt that the fair-minded majority want a system that secures Britain’s borders, and uphold this country’s fine tradition of providing sanctuary to people fleeing persecution.”

Does anyone really disagree with that?

He is targeting the smugglers not the asylum seekers / migrants themselves. I’ll be polite and say that I think you’ve misread (as I believe you are better than your comment)

Big difference in chastising people smugglers and asylum seekers.

People Smugglers are absolute scum. They are preying on the desperation of families who have suffered atrocities, overloading boats putting hundreds of lives at risks for their own financial gain.

Fair point, in this case I didn't look into it enough and I just reacted because I saw on twitter it said Starmer was giving a speech on "small boats" Ishould have looked into it further.
Iit's jsut a concern is all. maybe I'm sensitive because of the Elphicke thing but this "small boats" issue is jsut so ludicrously inflated compared to the actual problems it cause and compared to the homelessness, cost of living crisis, degradation of public services, isolation from our main trading partners that are casing actual problems in this country. Fine, yes go after people smugglers, this is a good thing. But it seems to be the only focus of the political parties when there are so many bigger issues we need to fix.

In summary: People smugglers = Bad. and I'm glad the issue is being addressed. It jsut seems like it's all a political party needs to promise. Which is troublesome.

They’re not attacking the asylum seekers are they, they’re targeting the people smugglers
 
Not really red, obviously I know that sadly many people have died in the crossings and that makes the traffickers disgusting, merciless murdering, bastids exploiting the weak and vulnerable,

BUT to say they are as bad as, or even worse than terrorists is in my mind over egging the pudding. He went for the shock factor rather than thinking it through. Bet he wishes he could take it back.

If not, he’s a tosser

Can you just clarify. Has Starmer actually said that people smugglers are no better than terrorists?

All I can see reported is that he said he would use existing counter-terror laws to locate, investigate and apprehend the people smugglers.

The closest I can find is “that means new powers that, as with would-be terrorists, can be used pre conviction with High Court approval and that can limit the ability of the gangs to conduct their vile business”

Which isn’t really what you’re accusing him of saying.
