3 players to get us promoted

In the modern game, young players with promise sell for my re than players in their prime.

I think this is because of resale value and contracts.

Gyokeres is only 25 now. Had he flopped at Sporting, they'd still have been able to move him on and recoup a large slice of their investment.

A player in his prime will be looking for a big 4 year contract. If he flops, you are stuck with him. See Britt as a prime example.

I'd expect Blackburn to demand around the same as we got for Chuba (1 year older, but 1 year more on his contract). We can't afford that, but I wouldn't pay it if we could.

Getting Chuba back might actually be cheaper, and a safer bet as we know he can flourish in our system. I expect him to be too expensive too though.

Yeah, suppose you're right about that, especially for higher level young lads, but lower levels they can still be picked up fairly cheaply, especially those who haven't developed as much as some had hoped. It's just as easy for a young lads valuation to halve, as it is to double. Look at Giles, he was worth probably what 8m when he was here? He's done nothing in a year now, so that could be back down to ~£3-5m. He's only had one assist all year, and it's not like he's the greatest defender in the world. I'd have him back for £4m though, but don't think Hull will be able to afford that and Luton may need to off-load if they come down.

I didn't think Gyokeres was a risk either, that was one of the main reasons I wanted him, even if he didn't work out for £15m or whatever, we would have easily still got £10m for him, as he was still quite young and the attributes he has you just don't "lose", unless you have a major injury, but that's the risk you need to take.

Szmodsic is getting on a little bit, we wouldn't be getting any money back for him unless we had him a year and then shifted him on, but that doesn't make much sense for us unless we were really pushing for promotion and giving it everything we've got. I don't believe we have the cash to take that risk. If we got into the prem he probably wouldn't be good enough in his role to be able to keep us up, we would need someone a higher level than that I expect.

Chuba won't come back, he's gone up a level and won't be keen on coming back down. It's not his fault Ajax are shyte, he's still more than good enough for the top level of their league, and too good for the champo.

Giles is signing for Hull permanently in the summer. Its part of the loan deal. Not sure on the fee though.

Gyok was no risk I agree and a mistake not to get him in summer 2022.
Him with Akpom would have been prem ready.
But that’s sadly gone, he will be at Arsenal next season.

I'd like to sign Willock, especially since he's available on a free this summer.

For me - Chairs a great player, but he'll come with a £5m+ price tag. We already have Azaz and other players who can play the same role... So that money would be better spent elsewhere (CDM, backup CF) in my opinion.

Szmodics Will cost over £20 million and definitely go to one of the promoted sides or newly relegated at worst

Willock is signing for Sunderland

I think if we're talking 3 players to get us promoted then we need 3 players of the quality of Archer, Giles and Ramsey. Not necessarily those positions and, clearly, we can't afford to buy all of them so we're probably talking buy 1, loan 2. We also need them in early and they need to be able to adapt the Championship and our style of play. If we lose Forss or McGree they would also need replacing with players of similar ability.

Right now we probably have a team that can challenge for 5th to 6th with a fair wind. What we need is a team challenging for 2nd-4th. It may not look like much but it is a huge step at this level and won't come cheap.

Personally, I think we're looking for a centre midfielder, a left forward and #10/second striker. At least one of those will need to be good enough to end the year in the team of the season.

Thinking of who has shone in the league this year, I think we need to be looking at players of the standard of Jack Clarke or Jaden Philogene on the left, Conor Chaplin, Joel Piroe in the #10 role and Gabriel Sara or Matt Grimes in midfield. As I say, there's no way (with the possible exception of someone like Grimes) that we can afford to buy any of those so we're really looking for high impact loans or spotting a Morgan Whittaker type talent who is ready for a massive breakthrough.

Some we might be able to buy. As well as the usual names, I could see buying one of the following plus 2 Premier league loans:
Zian Flemming. I think he's on the way out this summer. I think he's probably a bit above Finn Azaz right now but Azaz is improving nicely.
Billy Mitchell also at Millwall and is a little bit "Mr Millwall" so might be reluctant to leave but I think he could be a breakout holding midfielder in the right team.
Matt Grimes. Been with Swansea since he was an embryo. Change of scenery might bring him up a level.

Same position as jack clarke wondering whats happening there. Why would he sign for Sunderland when they don't even have a manager in place for next season

I think promotion and relegation can play a big part in recruiting. There's those players deemed surplus to requirements for the teams that go up to the premiership (possibly someone like Piroe if Leeds went up) and then players with relegated teams who don't want to play at a lower level and who teams need to move on (Laird, Sorba Thomas, Ugbo, Windass).

I'd definitely like use to reinvent the Chuba Giles style partnership or just sign them both again.

Shame that Coburn's missed a lot of the season. If he'd had a few more games and had no injury problems I would have been happy to go with Latte Lath and him as the main strikers next season.
Still would have Forss for back up.
The same Forss who himself has injury issues this season. We have struggled with injuries with all our strikers and we need more strength in depth in that dept.

So he has one big move left in him. We'd be buying at the height of the market and would never get the outlay back.
It almost feels like some people haven’t paid attention to the clubs policy on signing players these last few windows doesn’t it.

Also, listening to his interview with Brazil and McCoist he came across as saying he wants to sign for a premier league club. Bold.
