Your favourite Black & White Film

I also liked the sidney poitier film when he was dating a white girl, I think that was black and white - Guess who's coming to dinner my wife says.

I think someone else mentioned 12 angry men.
Fabulous actor Sidney Poitier. In the Heat of the Night is one of my all time favourites ...... but not black and white.

Some great movies already mentioned so I'll add The Third Man to the older movies and Man Bites Dog, American History X and of course, Clerks for the modern list.

Kes, All the Frankenstein, Wolfman, Dracula, Mummy,Universal Studios films, All Will Hay films, All Marx Bros Films, Abbot &Costello films , Day the earth stood still, Ealing comedy films, St Trinians films, To Kill a mocking Bird. Like a Cat on hot tin roof, In the heat of the night,

I use to love any of the Marx Brother's films when I was younger but I think my favourite black and white films are the WW2 themed films. Too many to mention.

I also like the James Cagney films, Mickey Rooney in Boys Town, but my favourite b & w must be 12 Angry Men.

Also a shout for 'To Kill a Mockingbird.'

Strangers on a Train - to be honest all Hitchcock whether black & white or colour was well worth watching, but this is the best of the Black and White stuff for me, especially as The 39 Steps has already been mentioned.

The Big Sleep, The Maltese Falcon, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, as well as the already mentioned Casablanca - Can't beat a bit of Bogart!

Rififi - In French, but if you're not afraid of subtitles (or speak French!) an absolute treat. Contains a brilliant sequence of around 30mins of film without any dialogue spoken or musical soundtrack but there's so much tension you don't even notice.

Kes? A great film but I am sure Bobby Charlton was in red.

Can't forget Dr Strangelove (I ain't typing the rest of the title out, I'll be here all night!).

"Gentlemen you can't fight in here this is the war room!"

Third Man's my all time favourite black and white or otherwise. Graham Greene screenplay, Trevor Howard, Joseph Cotton, Orson Welles and that fabulous music - I can't off my head think of another film with the music played throughout on a single instrument. Anton Karas made for life with that.

Some great films on this thread. Gaslight's got to be worth a mention -given English a new word.

Hard Day's Night on BBC4 right now :)
