Yorkshire Ripper dead

I started a new job in Headingley in the early 1990s - the building had a piece of wasteland out the back, one of his victims was found there.

At the time, Headingley was very dimly lit and I always thought it must have been absolutely terryfying living in the Leeds area in the 70s and 80s

'fairplay' he got covid after a heart attack and refused treatment.

How much has it cost 'us' to detain this scum bag? I know the death penalty is subjective and many are flat out against it. That said the likes of him and the Wests etc should have been exterminated on completion of bieng found guilty👍

It gives me very strange thoughts. My father was from Leeds and had to give statements to the police as one of the victims had connections with his office in the midlands. My dad was never the sort to have any part to play in harming anyone, just goes to show how desperate the police were to catch someone.

Yep, that was Jacqueline Hill. I was in the year above her at 6th form and her boyfriend was a childhood friend who lived round the corner. Like her I went to Leeds University (left the year before she was murdered) and passed the spot where she was killed many times on the way to The Original Oak in Headingley. Thoughts to her family and friends, it will be the 40th anniversary of her death this coming Tuesday.

I went to Sunday School with one of the young women he murdered.

Its an unfair world when she died at 21 and he lived till 74.

I've walked along there to the Oak many times - I'd forgotten that it was Jaqueline Hill - RIP

Nah, he was inside for nearly forty years, every day living in fear of where the next attack would come from. He was stabbed, blinded in one eye, had boiling water thrown over him, his life was so bad he wanted to die for years, but couldn’t. A short visit to prison and a noose, too easy.

I was at Leeds University between 78 and 81 - Jacqueline was a friend of a friend who I met a few times. Up until that point, the Headingley area and the routes down to the University from there seemed safe .... or maybe we just didn't think it would happen round there. I seem to remember the press at the time were implying it was "only" prostitutes that were the Ripper's target

I also got interviewed by the police when the "Wearside Jack" tape was sent in - seemed they were interviewing anybody with a vague "north east" accent.

Horrendous time . To think they interviewed him nine times and nobody clicked . They actually had to reinforce the floor at the Leeds police HQ due to all the files .
