York City V Boro - Old pic

Great pic.
Quite funny how the crowd is straining to get a view and wandering further and further onto the pitch :giggle:
Reminds me a bit of (1986/87??) new years day away match at York many moons ago.
Fancy dress, alcohol and a little bit of football.

If as the link address suggests, the pic was taken during a 5th round FA Cup tie on 12th Feb 1938 at Bootham Crescent. And considering Wilf Manion made his debut in 1936, it probably is him stood with his back to the camera.

Incidently, the attendance that day was 23,680. With most stood on the pitch by the look of things! We lost unall.

That's an interesting photo. I hadn't realised that there were no shirt numbers in those days. Does anyone know when they were first worn? And which one is the ref? The lino in the corner looks to have a very similar kit to York in b&w, so I couldn't pick the ref out.

Numbers were first worn regularly in league games in the 38-39 season just after this cup tie photo. They were worn by some teams much earlier than that 1914 indeed.

And as for the ref whilst you can’t say with any certainty my guess would that he is the right one of the couple at the back level with the 6 yard box.

Incredible to think that they crammed in over 28k at home to Huddersfield in the next round ( their all time record crowd). No health and safety in those days!
