Wrexham v Southampton

Or Southampton fans.

Let's not rewrite history, he's been getting the exact same criticism from Southampton fans for most of this season.
When the going gets tough and a game is tight and a fight for control or a battling draw is required then Azaz goes missing in action, he’s not who you want on the pitch
That’s why fans turn on him.

Third season in a row that he has ten goals or more. He’s not far from a third season in a row with 10 goals and 10 assists as well.

But yeah, he doesn’t tackle very well.

Rewrite history? Check his stats for us.

I'm not on about his stats.

I'm saying that it's clearly not just Boro fans when Southampton fans have been exactly the same with him.

I wish we still had Azaz on our team, he'd have scored loads, but he's always going to be a player that divides opinion because when he's not involved in goals, he can be a passenger and it winds some fans up.

They won't have been complaining about him last night, but Boro fans wouldn't have either.

Same criticism Whittaker gets, its infuriating that some of our fanbase would rather see a Conway running around headless waving his arms at the crowd than someone who actually produces.

Goal contributions per 90 minutes on pitch from our attacking players, not including pens:

Whittaker 0.61
McGree 0.53
Castledine 0.39
Hackney 0.37
Conway 0.31
Strelec 0.31
Sene 0.27
Browne 0.25
Hansen 0.23
Morris 0.10

Finn Azaz @ Southampton for comparison - 0.55

Since we beat them they have won 9 games by a single goal and I suspect he has been involved in most, if not all.

Morris is an attacking midfielder now? 🤣
A midfielder who has played over 2700 minutes you can expect something from him in terms of contribution but he was thrown in more for reference. Nearly got his 1st notch at weekend, Swansea keeper made a great save.

Its a good point - and its all about opinions. The fact is ; for me, the championship is very small margins between victory, draw and defeat. We've had a number of 1-0 or 2-1 score lines which could've been the other way had a small margin not gone for us ; Wrexham at home 0-1 and big man Moore misses a sitter of a header and we got a point when we ought to have got nothing.

Small margins between 7-8 teams and perhaps even more.

To be on the right side of those margins you needs players like Azaz. Gutting we had him on our books and the fans pushed him out because he’s not aggressive enough.

If we had him this season we’d be up with Coventry.

He's been directly involved in 7 of their 30 goals since we played them.

Only 1 of them in a game won by a single goal, when he scored the winner against Norwich.

Absolutely.
I just think this stereotype of him going missing in tight games is pretty unfair. For me he was always trying to make something happen.

I think Azaz could have thrived under Hellberg in terms of attacking output. I think he could have really capitalised on the chances we create for those positions behind the strikers and would have got us some much needed goals recently. This system suits him much more than Edwards system did.
That said, I still think we could only play one of Azaz/Whittaker otherwise the high press massively suffers and Whittaker has been just as productive as Azaz, in fact slightly more.

We've just missed that player since Whittaker got injured.

Our record this season against Southampton that some are quoting means nothing. New manager settled in now who knows what he is doing and they are on a roll playing brilliant football. We have stuttered badly and suspect confidence is low at the moment. Momentum can change though and a couple of wins for us next two games could make a huge difference but at the moment I think we are under dogs for promotion

It doesn't mean much but it will give us a bit of confidence that we can beat them.

They are clearly a different animal right now but still should give us some confidence, we didn't just beat them at the riverside we absolutely smashed them 4-0 with an brilliant second half performance.

He'd been in charge of Southampton longer than Hellberg had been in charge of Middlesbrough when we played them.
