World Vaccine Expert

This lengthy interview strips down everything to very easy understandable terms. A world expert explains the full process of developing a vaccine - he also tells how the only way to develop herd immunity is through a vaccine - 50% vaccine of population makes for 80% immunity. Dr Kim explains why vaccines are very safe and explains why it is a more straight forward process to develop a vaccine for the present virus than HIV - 100 strains of HIV and fortunately so far there is little sign of COVID mutating. That is the good news.
He explains how a big problem with COVID is that people can and do spread the virus who don't show signs of infection. Not the case with SARS. He says we will have to learn to live with new normal - it won't go away for a couple of years. A vaccine is all important to avoid second waves. He tells how the world is working together and talks through the time frames. He says be careful. Keep mask on. Hygiene important.

I would really recommend people listening to this - it is bang up to date and gives you all the real information stripped of propoganda or second hand hearsay.

I'll listen to it later but this is wrong:

90% of adults are immune to chickenpox because we have already had it. There is a vaccine available but we don't mandate it in this country. If enough people catch a virus and recover from it they can no longer carry it. That is what herd immunity means. Enough of the population aren't vectors for spreading the infection so the ones that are vulnerable are less likely to encounter it.

There is no way to get herd immunity under lockdown because not enough people will catch and recover from it.

Covid seems to be very mild in kids. If we all caught it as kids then it would kill a much smaller number of people.

Measles is one of the few viruses that give lifelong immunity after having it. The vast majority of viruses give either no immunity or perhaps up to two years. The common cold coronaviruses are a good example.

Chickenpox is not a good example as the virus can appear later in life as shingles.

The common cold is isn't one virus. It is hundreds of different strains. You don't get the same one multiple times but they mutate easily. Measles doesn't mutate. The flu vaccine we can get each year is a different vaccine every year.

If Covid-19 doesn't mutate then a single infection will be enough for lifelong immunity against it wouldn't it? If it does mutate then yes, a vaccine is the only way to get immunity but that sort of virus is much more difficult to keep up with as it would require multiple vaccines whenever a new strain is identified like the flu.

I had chickenpox as a kid and then shingles when at school.

The difference is that you didn't catch shingles. You already had it from when you got chickenpox. It was re-activated.

I would suggest you listen he is a world expert. Not you or I.

None of us are football experts either but this board exists so we can act like we are. You don't have to be an expert to have some knowledge. Should we not discuss anything?

I didn't say it was. I said the common cold coronaviruses (there are four of them and you never get immunity for more than a month or two at the most).

In terms of Covid-19 mutation, it's the protein around the active virus that will (and already does) mutate. This disguises the virus from our immune system allowing the virus to lock on to healthy cells and replicate. There are different types of vaccine being developed and we may need combinations that both go for the protein and the virus itself.

The measles virus is surrounded by a protein that, if it mutates, renders the virus ineffective. We know that isn't the case with coronavirus already.

As Bear says Covid19 is mutating in some form. There is story today on the BBC website. It is a mutated form that is proving so deadly according to the BBC article

There was no vaccine for Spanish Flu was there?

I believe 30% infection for SF created herd immunity as well as it mutated to something less dangerous. 225,000 died in the UK over a 12 month period. In 2 months we have lost around 45,000 (Financial Times figures) and we have had lockdown for over 6 weeks. This 4% infection rate figure we have been fed I don't believe I am afraid.

Interesting that Ferguson the UK virus expert said in his statement he was immune because he had had it. Therefore he is saying there is (herd) immunity and his actions (not words) backed this up. These official statement saying there is no evidence of herd immunity don't seem to be correct unless the experts disagree amongst themselves.

What we can all agree on is that this virus is very hidden, most of the infected show no signs at all of infection they are often silent and unknown carriers. This makes testing so much more critical. To me we should be testing at present in the millions. In an ideal world you are tested every time you leave the house. To test only the very sick is of very limited impact on stopping the spread which was what was happening until 2 weeks ago. The Government seemed to get testing wrong in March. It was done centrally in low numbers and taking up to 8 days for the results. Why are tens of thousands of air travellers coming into the UK without any testing, especially when coming off packed aircraft, bearing in mind the nature of the silent virus. It would not happen in China.
