Work to improve road safety at a busy suburban junction will get underway next week.

After a number of accidents at the junction of Stainton Way and Cypress Road, in Marton, new traffic signals comprising pedestrian and cycle crossings will be installed to keep people safe.
The slip lane coming off the eastbound carriageway of Stainton Way onto Cypress Road will be removed to help to reduce vehicle speed, with new crossings put in place at all three points of the junction – two on Stainton Way either side of Cypress Road and one on Cypress Road itself.

As part of the scheme, the redundant access to the Brunton Arms pub on the southern side of the road will also be removed and replaced with a grassed area.

The works will begin on Monday, September 11 and take up to 12 weeks to complete.

A spokesman for Middlesbrough Council said: “These works are important due to a lack of safe, controlled pedestrian crossings along this part of Stainton Way, from the Dixons Bank junction up to Gypsy Lane Railway Station.

“We want to thank local residents for their patience and apologise for any delays while work to improve the junction is underway.”
Press Release

I find this surprising.

I've used this junction probably 3-4 times a week for 30+ years as a motorist and I've never found it an issue or even heard of a problem for motorists or pedestrians. There was a brief period when the give way markings to give priority for those turning right into Cypress Road was introduced and that took some getting used to for those coming from the left who previously had priority, but that is the only issue I've come across.

I wonder if this is solving an actual issue or whether the limited funds could be better spent elsewhere, even if it was just fixing potholes.

On the accompanying email it said the line within the press release..

I'm still skeptical.

My friends son was knocked down in a hit and run there 15 years ago on Xmas eve though and I suppose it is possible this could have prevented that.

The junction from the Avenue into Gypsy Lane is worse. People fly down the Avenue and just pull out without looking and slowing down. I’ve seen a few smashes there in last couple of years.

Googling, the facebook notice from Nunthorpe Parish about this came up high.

4 comments which pretty much reflect my reaction.
'Is this not the junction of Cyprus Road and Stainton Way? Could you share the accident statistics that made this necessary please?'

'I have lived in this estate for over twenty years and have never heard or read about this being a dangerous junction. If anything needs to be done, it is the speed limit that requires checking.'

'Another waste of money for the council that is apparently almost bankrupt.

'Never known of any incidents on this junction so can not understand why

Is it a case of what Marton and Nunthorpe want, Marton and Nunthorpe gets, I wonder?
