Woodgate

Newy, I would put the ratio 90 % against him. Being local was a disadvantage- massive one.
Nosmo it’s all a matter of opinion , but we suffered Strachan , Monk and Pulis in 5 or so managers and we craved a ‘proper‘ boss much like NW . I really wanted him to do well and his early press conferences were encouraging . But he just didnt have it , it may come for him but perhaps youre right that it was too close for comfort . One thing is certain he can’t get much further from the Boro so he can’t blame us if it goes pear shaped

Honestly I would put 100% not particularly wanting Jonathan Woodgate to get the job.

ask any fan of any club at any time.. who do you want your next manager to be..

Tony Mowbray
Neil Warnock
Chris Hughton
Nigel Pearson
David Wagner
Slavisa Jokanovic
Michael Reiziger
Phillip Cocu
Aitor Karanka
Danny Cowley

saying any club.. any championship club. he's not going to be in the top 10. that's not to say he's not going to make a great manager. it is what it is.

I don't remember seeing the personal abuse. goes without saying if that happened it was unacceptable. but it's not from the majority of fans.
I agree with that . I can never recall personal abuse either at the match or on here , even when it looked nailed on we were going to drop .He’s taking an unjust swipe at us

I'm sure he says these things to demonstrate that he's not a soft touch and has the mentality to take on management roles but its not the first time his comments show him to have a bit of a bitter edge. You can take the kid out of Teesside.....

Yes he got dogs abuse from the usual social media idiots but I would say it never really spilled over into the stands before the covid break. The crowd never made it unpleasant for him, considering our fans booed Bryan Robson out of the club, and were calling for McLaren's head in the same season we were progressing to the UEFA final.

If there's any lesson its probably don't take on your dream job in your hometown if you know you're not experienced enough for it.

Joe Jordan is a useful addition and might be the missing word in his ear, he was coaching Woodgate at Spurs and I'm sure he was on Pulis team here (?) so it should be a good fit. Too often Woodgate would be stood hands in pockets wondering what to do as a game slipped away and he got eff all help from the people behind him on the bench.

You are right. The crowd at the matches were incredibly supportive and patient. He has a front on him I will give him that. A bit of self awareness wouldn’t go a miss. Doesn’t like criticism he’s in the wrong game

I really did not see the fact he had connections to the club and area was a disadvantage. I think the disadvantages were that the fans often recognise a car crash waiting to happen when they see one.
His alleged past behaviours both in the town and at other clubs, his lack of experience, the bull spouted at his unveiling (not all by JW it must be said), some of his post match interviews were car crashes. Fans bought into the vision stated, but it was quickly plain to see the vision did not match the actual reality of what was being witnessed on the pitch in both style, performance and results. Fans will not accept having the wool pulled over their eyes deliberately. He coached the team to within an inch of relegation and happily took responsibility whilst in post. His choice of assistant manager was flawed too. He was in part set up to fail, but he must accept his part in all that.

I would suggest Bournemouth have a stronger squad than Boro had when he took over in fairness and I am certain he has learned a few lessons he can take forward, Joe Jordan assisting him will bring a wealth of experience he can draw on. I wish him well whatever happens. The mistake at Boro was not just down to him, it was in part really down to who appointed him and the tools he was allowed in order to try to do his job. He would possibly have faired far better if coming to Boro at a later stage having gained experience elsewhere first.

I certainly don't remember hearing anything at the match, but I do remember reading stuff on here. People calling him 'village' and similar cracks about his intellect, presumably when most making the cracks have never spent any time in his company and don't know him as a person.

I think he's referencing more the social media comments/abuse, but as Block has said criticism and abuse is part and parcel of a career in football, you need a thick skin.

I'd imagine his comments here are more an attempt by him to demonstrate that he can cope and probably in response to a journo asking him about what he thinks about the fact that a lot of cherries fans don't really want him as manager.

This village crack is pretty well known though. It’s actually his nickname in the football world

I was just about to say that . The poor creature has had his feelings hurt it would seem . I guess we got too miffed that he was getting us relegated and it was like watching a plane going down

I've heard it too (I've also heard plenty call him Woody), but just because something is well known/discussed doesn't mean to say it's actually true, that's how myths develop. I also wouldn't necessarily link the village nickname to a lack of intellect.

Doesn't apply to all, but Footballers are generally seen as very immature, or at least the environment is and they do a lot of very stupid and silly things for effect to fit into their environment, including playing up to stereotypes. The Teesside accent also has the ability to make even the most intelligent person sound like a complete dumb-ass, so I wouldn't necessarily equate the nickname or stories of dressing room banter to his actual intelligence levels.

I don't know him, so personally I wouldn't jump to that conclusion (although the evidence of his team selection v Swansea is damning evidence! 😉).

He doesn’t come across the brightest but that’s not my main issue with him and wasn’t at the time, for me it’s the arrogance and the self importance and lack of self awareness that frustrated me and these are the type of people I struggle to get along with in life so when you have a person like that managing your team it’s hard to get onboard with and you throw in all that with poor results and flirting with relegation it’s going to end in tears I’m afraid and I’m not sure what he really expects.

His media skills were good at press conferences - he got on really well with the media and they appreciate that he has an unusual turn of phrase - he doesn't talk in clichés.

I agree, he's good at being 'matey' and 'one of the people', which is why people think he's likeable and 'good with the media'. I would say that is seperate from his devious tactic of seperating himself from what actually happens on the pitch - he seems to create a distinction between that, and himself, thereby thinking he is absolving himself of any blame or responsibility. to me it smacks of someone who is a nice enough person, knows footy well enough to know what should be happening on the pitch.... but is apparently completely bereft of the personal skills to actually make all that happen. he is 100% NOT a competent, high level manager, and is way out of his depth as a championship manager.

Feel for you mate. Think you are in for a tough couple of months with him in charge. Selfishly though because of our respective league position I hope that’s the case too.
