Woodgate not sacked - rumours

The guy who’s meant to be ITK on one boro has claimed McClaren has been seen . Didn’t say where but he said he’s around. Would suggest he means Rockliffe

There may be legs in this story, as apparently Gibson has just gone to check that the grass is still green ;)

Was waiting for the old grass is green response :D.

in all seriousness though, what is people’s thought on a return of the Mac?

I would say a McClaren return is even less likely than a Karanka one. Especially while Warnock is available and presumably would be willing to fulfil a bit of an ambition to work with Gibson on a short-term basis.

The problem is, McClaren might actually just be staying at the hotel, since its quite a nice hotel. I once saw Charlie Nicholas there but I didn't assume he was taking over as manager.

Pretty certain this is all b***ks.

Last I heard and it was a couple of years ago, McLaren was thought to be clueless towards the end and the powers that be didn't want him anywhere near the club again ..

it probably is b***ks but I just thought it was worth sharing. I can delete my comment if you want.

Ha, no need for that.

All I meant was someone sees McClaren and rather than say 'I saw McClaren at Rockliffe' they say to their mate 'Woody's been sacked, I'm pretty sure' and the rumour mill starts. Everybody wants to be first to break the news, that probably isn't even happening.

I think it highly unlikely tbh. The only reason I could think of was to help out Woodgate in the short term in an el tel way. I would have no bother with that.

He lives just outside Yarm, so doubt he would be a paying overnight customer of the hotel (unless his mrs kicked him out after a row about the grass). He may just use the facilities though from time to time i guess.

This season has been quite the roller-coaster so far. I'll admit I didn't want Woodgate anywhere near the manager's seat - he always seemed to lack the necessary intelligence to out-think other managers and I doubted his motivational/leadership credentials (despite being a great centre half I don't think he captained any sides?)

That said, the Xmas period certainly brightened my view of his tenure and it seemed like his talk of attacking/pressing football based around a young team may finally have come to fruition (a view which obviously didn't last long).

Short term, we either keep Woodgate and risk going down (weirdly I'd actually keep him on if we did go down as I think it's likely to develop him as a manager) or bring in an experienced manager to keep us up (contract to end of the season only).

Regardless of this season we need a knowledgeable director of football in the summer IMO. It seems to me that we're trying to build that structure but with Gibson and Bausor (neither of whom know a lot about football) fulfilling the role. We then sort a style of play, recruitment strategy (players and managers) and build from there.

The more I think about it, the more the Peter Kenyon link up looked promising but I think a lack of ambition, FFP and personal differences ended that approach abruptly. Could it be that Gibson has "thrown the baby out with the bath water" by refusing to consider that approach again?

Well he famously captained his hometown club, fulfilling a lifelong ambition, shortly after signing for us permanently, and then promptly left a matter of weeks later to join another mid-table club.

I've supported him this season but the comparisons with Mowbray etc don't wash for me. He's an ex-player, not a legend.

The old sentimental arguments don't wash with me either, I'd happily have our manager wear a Newcastle top and Sunderland shorts on the touchline every week if it meant we won matches :D

The issue with keeping him on in the hope that he'll develop as a manager is that to me he doesn't seem to learn from his mistakes, and frankly, I question whether he is ever going to be able to, as to me doesn't appear to have the intelligence.

Nothing about him suggested to me that he was going to have what it takes to become a successful manager when he was first appointed, and I feel exactly the same now.

Agreed parmo , like most I didn’t want him at the start but hoped for the best happy to be proved wrong . I even looked at the positives when things just got worse but just kidded myself to try and feel a bit better .

Even when we won four in a row it was with a side with forced decisions , in terms of players he had to pick . When he got options he picks the worse side on top of the fact his inability to manage it’s a recipe for disaster .

The players aren’t without accountability mind .

He didn’t get the nickname “Village” without reason.

I'd rather have Mrs McClaren in the hot seat. It genuinely staggers me when I read posts suggesting that Woodgate should stay. Have to say though, I'm glad that the league table tells lies as the one I just saw on Sky fills me with dread.
