Woodgate first team coach !!

Seems like Gibbo wanted someone who knew the club and structure (insurance policy who knows). They obviously worked their magic on Carrick, who was probably unsure of this set-up. Surprising as it will be his neck on the line. However he's now agreed to this, so up to him and the club to make it work. Personally, I think we needed a total fresh start, but let's get behind Carrick and his team, and see how it goes. UTB.
Must admit I'm nervous that Woodgate is being groomed (again). Carrick won't be here long term (either sacked or poached).

I think the fresh start is the new structure in itself. Just need it to prove it's worth on the pitch with regards to the right managerial/coaching appointments I guess. And player recruitment obviously.

But on the other hand Scrug lets remember were an experienced manager & back room, who the majority on here said waz tbe best in the championship had us heading in one direction, down
I don’t think that was entirely down to the manager

Good grief...weeks of delays/negotiations re: backroom staff and we end up with this?
My view was that I'd be happy to take a chance on Carrick, IF a strong support structure was brought (Phelan etc).
Posters getting grief for being critical of this bizarre appointment of Woodgate?
Which other club in the land would do this - This isn't personal against JW, he's been offered a role and taken it, just absolutely typical of Gibson.
I'll be at PNE on Saturday supporting the team as I have done for 51 years but Christ On A Bike...

EXACTLY. How do you think the Newcastle fans would take to John Carver being brought back as an assistant coach after he won 3 out of 20 fixtures, a 15% win record. Not well I'd wager.

There is no way Woodgate should be back at the club. Totally splits the fanbase and casts a shadow over Carrick's appointment. Bringing back the negative energy from that car crash 19/20 campaign.

I just hope that I eat my words and am proven wrong.

I read somewhere that Woody didn't like the negative reaction to his spell as manager. Hope he can handle the reaction to his appointment as first team coach!

I'm delighted by these appointments. We need hungry young coaches willing to work within the constraints of our setup. Onwards and upwards!

Why on earth we've brought this thick tw@t back who took us from 7th to a relegation scrap I do not know. And guess what, we've also just gone from a 7th placed finish to the relegation scrap AGAIN, so what the fcuk is the thought process behind putting JW in as assistant manager?

I like the bloke as a person and he obviously loves the club to bits, but as a coach, as far as I'm aware he's out of his depth being Carrick's right hand man.
When you label him as a thick tw@t and in the next sentence claim to like him as a person I think it says more about you than him.

There's quite a lot of borderline hatred on more than one thread for Woodgate and that's unfortunate. No-one knows how the dynamic is going to work. A majority seemed to be in favour of Carrick. Yes, several on the basis that he would bring experience from others too. The delay must have been that his first choices either couldn't (or wouldn't) come. Would Carrick have walked away if he didn't want Woodgate? I suspect he would.

because our fans are so knowledgable about football, and so we should be listening to what they have to say on managerial appointments
Some football fans are knowledgable though. A lot of our fans correctly called that selling our best player on the eve of the season was disastrous business. Apparently this had escaped the club/recruitment team since they had no succession plan in place. I say this not because I want to go over old ground. It's gone now. But if you want to appeal to the club knowing more about the team than the fans do that's a bit of a stretch given what has gone on this summer. The club gets it wrong, a lot, and particularly since the day Steve McClaren departed, which is now knocking on for 20 years.

I think there are good reasons to be disappointed with Woodgate's appointment not least his awful track record. Let's hope the club do know best. I'll remain skeptical until there's evidence in the 'good appointment' column that starts to balance out what's in the 'bad appointment' column.

People seem to forget that Woodgate was the one who put Tavernier in the team and played him consistently, when Pulis loaned him out to MK Dons.

Let's give the bloke a chance eh.

I'm sorry but as I have said on another thread bringing Woodgate in is just a step backward. He's no tactical genius and employing a young sacked former occupant of the role, to be your subordinate, is going to be a nightmare for Carrick. Who would want to do that in their work place?

(That's without getting into any subjective questions about his character.) Why on earth would we even consider adding all this potential baggage into the mix now? (I'm repeating myself here - sorry)

The reaction is quite incredible.

Woodgate was initially brought into the club to coach the younger lads - eventually promoted to assistant by Pulis. And we at least placed well in the league during those seasons.

Failed in his season as manager. Tried to change too much too quickly, but we've seen this season how difficult it can be to turn around a team with no confidence even for an experienced successful manager.

Went to Bournemouth as coach - impressed so much in a short time they promoted him to caretaker. Did not do too badly there.

Is clearly well liked and respected on TV/radio - could easily see out a lucrative career there...

Realistically- it is really difficult to know who is a good coach - it probably depends on how well you fit with the total set up. But the idea that Woodgate would never get a job anywhere else (with an ex international teammate) does not quite add up.

I can both like someone and believe them to be thicker than a submarine door. The two are not mutually exclusive.

I pray that we have some sort of resurgence in form and results pick up, but you can't tell me you're filled with confidence at the club reinstating a bloke who massively under performed and realistically should never have been appointed in the first place.

Any actual hatred towards Woodgate is silly given he is one of our own, but I wouldn't constitute calling him a thick tw@t as hatred. I could've went a step further and called him a thick c*nt, something I've called mates on many occasions but it still isn't hatred.
