Woodgate first team coach !!

Carrick with an experienced brain alongside him would have been a positive, this so far is yet another gamble. Woodgate failed as a head coach at Boro, failed at Bournemouth as manager and when as a first team coach, failed alongside Pulis with Boro. He is in good company mind. I am not happy one iota and I fear his presence will tarnish Carrick if the wheels don’t get back on the track. The appointment of Woodgate suggests to me that Gibson is maybe even prepared to give him another crack at the top job in time. Smacks of more cloth cutting to me. You can dress it up any way you like, fits ‘the so called plan’, the trouble is we seem to get ours off Baldrick.

I've had a further think about it and found out* that the reason the process took so long was that Carrick insisted on Woodgate as part of his coaching staff and initially Gibbo said no way. Gibbo had a rethink and here we are.

Prove me wrong.

Can’t prove you wrong muttley but as per Carrick in his interview and Nixon’s ”backroom shocker” comment, Woody‘s been in the equation for a couple of weeks.

not cloth cutting. simple reason we have 25m in on transfers and managers/coaches cost less than 2m over 3 years I reckon

I seem to recall also that Woody was influential in the acquisition and development of Djiksteel and Bola, who for minimal costs have become decent Championship players.
If memory serves, Bola played a handful of games and was loaned back to Blackpool and Dijksteel was relatively quickly dropped by Woodgate.
He literally had zero positive influence on them, quite the opposite.

Sounds like my flight of fancy was more accurate than some of the self-proclaimed oracles on here.

I am now an official oracle of all knowledge. Ask me anything old boy

You’re correct morrissey about Bola being loaned back to Blackpool in January 2020. This was after him making only 7 appearances that season under Woodgate.

However, in that same season Djiksteel made 40 appearances under Woodgate (plus another 8 under Warnock), hardly a sign of a player being “quickly dropped”.

Ok, memory might not be what it once was so I checked just now... in the 2019-20 season, Dijksteel started 17 games...not the 48 you claim.

You’re right about the 17 appearances. My data had inadvertently also included the following season where he appeared in 31 additional games.

Woodgate 100% bombed Bola out.

But Dijksteel just got a long term injury and missed most of the season from November onwards.
He was playing quite badly before the injury, so it might explain the confusion.

Perhaps its about our budget Neither of them surely can demand top manager/coach wages. Carricks first real job as a manager and could be that Woodgate is paying Gibson to take him back.
All we could afford??

I think he got the odd knock/injury and missed the odd game, but I do recall him being dropped.
I complained to my mate that trying to follow a Brentford type model surely included coaching and developing young players, not giving them 5-10 games then loaning or dropping them (Payero is the latest).

Agreed morrissey but I thought this discussion was started not about the club and the Brentford type model, but instead it was about Woodgate and his particular contributions to player development and improvement of club coffers.

Woodgate had nothing to do with the Payero fiasco. But in the case of Djed Spence for example, he was definitely instrumental in advancing his introduction toward what was to eventually result in the club’s realization of £12.5m.

In closing and going forward, I believe Woodgate will continue to perform well in advancing the development of young players for our club.

Agreed, I really hope JW is a success in the role, I just feel it is an appointment made on not much more than the fact he's ex Boro and perhaps yet another Gibbo 'hunch'.
Genuinely, I'm behind the club and now he's here, that certainly includes Woodagate.
