Wimbledon electronic line calls…

I only noticed during Raducanus defeat they were using electronic calls…

Just reading there’s a few being classed as dodgy, and raducanu has claimed there were a few in her game…

It is not actually accurate there is a degree to with it is incorrect. But they say its better than human error. Was one earlier today in the Kartal game. The ball was clearly out but the technology didn't work. So the Umpire got them to replay the point that would of been controversial if Pavlyuchenkova went on to lose the match. I don't understand why isn't tv review being used as on the replay you could see was clearly out. In the Radacanu game was a few decisions that were incorrect too at crucial moments in tight games it can make the difference.

It will definitely be better than human error. I know someone who has been line judge the last few years (not this one obvs) and he said with the speed of some of the shots you tend to just become a very good guesser based on trajectory etc.

Very hard for the human eye to clearly see where it lands at 130 mph.

There do seem to have been some clear errors. Probably not as many as the players think mind.

There was a one on the first round where the ball was clearly in to the point chalk flew up and the AI called it out.

They reviewed it through hawkeye and the ball fully covered the line. It wasn’t even a close call of mm.

Can see them going back to umpire next year

The obsession for getting things right is of course part of the continuous struggle for improvement and perhaps perfection. We’re all probably in favour of continuous improvement of course but if the electronic devices can’t offer 100 percent efficiency and correctness then perhaps we bring back humans until the sensors can detect at 99.9 percent accuracy.

The trouble with humans of course is that we’re relying on their instincts which may or may not be good enough for some fast moving sports— but there no denying we’ve definitely made progress.

Clear error in the Sonay Kartel game today which cost her opponent a game - fortunately not the match.

They wont go back to human eye. It speeds the game up immeasurably and it gets most calls right.

The 'curtain twitchers' at Stockley Park have nowt to do in the closed season. Maybe we could rope them in to draw some lines and generally naff about whilst everyone stands around for 5 minutes, jobs a good 'un.

I used to like it when players had 3 challenges a set to review line calls. Now when there is a “close call” hawk eye shows an image of the ball hitting or missing the line which always confirms that ‘the computer’ got it spot on!! (Who checks the checkers?).
