Willian

It is unfair to blame Ozil for that, the club was daft enough to give him that contract so why should he now turn down their money?

But if it was a company executive, especially a Tory one, getting paid even a fraction of that that they would be roundly attacked on here for being a greedy, capitalist with no morals but because its some brat footballer that's okay. Funny old game.

Think of all the production companies etc laying staff off. They'll still be coughing up top dollar for artists and contributors! For some reason actors are allowed to earn obscene money though, and footballers aren't.

Bit virtuous this Finny. If you're watching it in the pub, subscribing at home to Sky (whether or not you add Sports to the package), subscribing to NowTV for one-offs, or Amazon Prime (or buying anything off Amazon), listening to commentary on Talksport, buying shirts, paying for a season ticket , you're part of the 'problem'.

But its not really a 'problem', its just an ever changing world we have to get used to until there's an economic revolution. Most large, privately-funded companies behave in exactly this way, not just football teams.

Great way to judge things
It’s bad somewhere else so its not a problem here.

I’ll stick with - I think it stinks, is a real problem and will be for a long time cos most people don’t give a sh1!t.
Thanks

Or 'what I do is fine. But what everyone else does is hypocritical'.

What on earth are you talking about?
Everyone can do what they want - its up to them
I’m telling you what I think - where is the problem?
You're 'blaming' people, for what you see as an injustice, for having Sky Sports subscriptions.

I'm just saying that drawing the line there is short-sighted. If you're putting money into Sky, Amazon, BT, Newscorp, or even our own club, in any way at all, you're part of the problem with regards footballers' salaries. You can't just draw the line yourself and preach about it, but turn a blind eye to the rest of it. Not without being challenged anyway.

Of course he can afford it, but chooses not to.

I had a really interesting conversation with a guy from MFC a few years back, who told me how "lean" the non playing aspects of the club were, and that for all the glitz and glamour (ahem!) on the playing side, it really is a penny pinching operation on anything else.

It wasn't news to me, and I think we can see that in a lot of the fan facing operations from MFC.
Of course, that's how they generate the obscene funds for player wages.

FFS - I’m not blaming anyone.
I simply pointed out that if you are hacked off with the financial situation in football a Sky subscription isn’t congruent. I’m aware there are other areas too.
If you count that as preaching - guilty as charged
I’m not turning a blind eye to anything btw

Fine, came across as a bit preachy, thats all. Let's move on. (y)

Where do you draw the line though? Most big business has an unsavoury element to it. Nike comes to mind as does the Ben and Jerry's recent virtue signalling faux pas.
There's no line. It's difficult I agree, but for myself if I come across a company owned or part owned by the Murdoch clan I try to steer clear. I'd just rather not give them my money, it's supporting an odious person. Same with Wetherspoons, Warburton's and Amazon.

I do kind of regret my "you're part of the problem" comment earlier because it's all personal choice and as a rule I try not to impose my choices on anyone else in such matters.

That's fair enough. We are all free to make our choices on who we give our business to - a lot of people don't care - some will base their decision making on value for money - like in the case of Wetherspoons - people frequent the place because it's cheap and cheerful and would rather go there because other places close by ar obviously profiteering at our expense. Others won't go there based on political reasoning - ie the owner, Tim Martin has specific political ideas.

Right, so let's all stop our Sky subscriptions and all the staff who work in the call centres, all the engineers, dish erectors, lose their jobs because no one needs them. They're still gonna pay Willian what he's worth... cough...

TBF Murdoch isn't involved with Sky anymore though, is he? He is with talksport though, who I imagine lots of people tune into on a regular basis without giving it a second thought.

All this is a depressing sign of the times I'm afraid.
We either have to accept it or not.
I'm falling more out of love with professional football or really the PL on a daily basis.
My biggest enjoyment last season was watching a few non league games, grass roots, family orientated, was very refreshing to see and be a part of.

Just another little comment. I know a lot of people who won't subscribe to Sky because of their influence on football etc, but will take out a NowTV pass for £9.99 when Boro are playing or there's a match on they especially want to watch, on a semi-regular basis. Sometimes they take a month pass for £35 or whatever it is, on the premise they can cancel it more easily, which is fair enough.

I pay £10 a month for Sky Sports via the box, every month, haggled them right down. So its not actually any different in terms of what we give to the devil.

I actually still quite like the Championship. Most of the players earn around £13k a week, ok its a big salary but they only earn that for about ten years, tops. Its big bucks but its not completely unfathomably osbcene. I don't feel completely out of touch with them, not to the extent that I do people like Bale and Ozil, being paid a couple of million a month and don't even play!

The family is though. I wouldn't listen to Talksport just because the little I heard a few years ago, it sounded like radio for Sun readers. Apologies if I'm sounding snobbish!
