Wilder shows his limited ability - AGAIN

The transfer situation with us has been a head-scratcher for the past 3-4 seasons and it doesn’t seem to have improved even with the influx of a football director.

Perhaps we’re aiming for players who are really out of our reach. Our transfer policy is weird imo as I certainly would not have brought in a loaner to play as a No.1 keeper. I’m sure that the outfield players are thinking the same thing also— he’s the boss of the goal yet he’s a temp. Stupid.
He’s - Scott - only been in his role for a season. You don’t change the culture of a club in twelve months. People point Brentford and Brighton and the like but they built over years, not months.

The thing about a loan ‘keeper… when Wilder took Sheffield United up, he had Dean Henderson in goal. It’s far from stupid.

Its not just two games into a season though the poor away record goes way back into last season. The first half yesterday was a shambles as was the last away match of the previous season I dont accept it's just personnel hes tatically setting the team up incorrectly. What's most galling and completely unacceptable is being outfought he has to take some responsibility for his team. let's hope it does turn round in time with new players until they come in, is it same old same old and away day batterings to a soft centred boro because of wilders principles
How many games have we played? Because it looks like two to me TBF.

Also, he DOES take responsibility. I remember a game we lost last season, at the next press conference he said it out loud and in public that he and his staff are at fault and responsible. It’s a collective. He lost yesterday as well.

People are so quick to have a pop at managers. Just let him have a chance to build his team.

I renewed because the football is the most entertaining I have seen in a long time. That is due to this manager and if the club backed him I firmly believed we would go up automatically. As the transfer window progressed slowly I thought if we could get 7 points in the 7 games before the window shut it would be acceptable to me. But, the club has to back him. If it doesn’t then I agree with Wilder, why bring him in? He has the promotions on his CV, fans from his previous clubs all rated his style and even though we are not yet getting 90 min performances, when it does click it is great to watch. The potential is there and I think he will get sick of us before the majority of us get sick of him. He has to be backed.

With one slight proviso, he is totally committed to that approach. He is on record as wanting promotion this year and talked of marquee signings, which have not, as yet, materialised. I am not convinced that the hierarchy and Wilder are on the same page despite his comment they were. That said he is the best manager we have had in years and it is up to Gibbo to keep him sweet as best he can.
That's my worry he seems a very here and now manager and obviously doesnt like pratting about, which we seem good at.

He talks of building but if he doesnt get what he wants I think he wont hesitate to move on. I dont see correlation in what he says and the signings we are linked with.

Time will tell I suppose. We as a club need to build slowly just dont think wilder will see it like that.

Hello Viv.
Actually, he`s only been here since 8th November 2021.
Thats 9 months by my reckoning.
Not very long - and hes had to jettison the deadwood and turn around a tanker heading for the wall.
Agreed: It takes time.(y)

I agree but to back him means a completely different midfield and attack
Will the hierarchies support him?

The away form in 2022 is a joke (2 wins), and has sadly continued into this season. For me Wilder needs to set up differently away from home, the problem is, i don’t think he can
I don’t think he can based on his squad. It’s like brideshead revisited I’m afraid with our transfer policy.

I know we talk about finding replacements for Tav and Payero but we still haven’t found a replacement for Morsi and that is a basic requirement for Wilder’s tactics away from home.

I just feel that we’re going down the wrong path with our transfer policy— almost like we’re shopping at Harrod’s when we should be shopping at C&A.

So we are building a team and squad over seasons but we have a loan keeper for a season we are unlikely to be able to afford permanently. This is where I think there is conflict in the recruitment policy either the strategy is to go up this season with expensive loans like Giles and Steffen or its to build a squad over seasons we seem to be caught between two stools. I don't think Scott and wilder are quite on the same page

His team also scored 78 goals which - as things stand - is not what's going to happen at Boro.

It’s incremental though, isn’t it? Next summer, maybe we add the top-class(or just a very good) ‘keeper on a permanent deal. If we’re in the division above then that makes it easier, obviously. Karanka’s team had Bamford in it. When we went up, it was with a core that had been built over three or so years. He didn’t fit everything in one window. In fact he had five to get us up. Wilder’s still in the middle of his second one. Second.

Good loans are part of the plan. Packing the team with loans isn’t sensible IMO but we’re not doing that. Steffen, Giles. Maybe a striker. Or if we could two quality strikers on loan, or a class midfielder and a striker on loan, are you saying we shouldn’t do it?

I am saying you either go for it or you don't if you think promotion is a 3 year project then what's the point in Giles this season. Building incrementally season on season is really really difficult look how long it took Brentford to go up when every season they sold their top player and had to recruit again. In 3 seasons even squad linchpins like fry McNair will probably be gone so all in all its virtually impossible to build gradually window after window. I don't even think wilder sees it as a three year project. So we need to back the manager this season and splash the tav and Spence cash building gradually isn't for us at the moment we seem to have half backed wilder which is no good

You can ‘go for it’ without betting the farm. To my mind, we’re in the Karanka era.

Phase one: sort it out, see if you can drag us out of the bottom half of the league. See what we need. Put some pride back.

Phase two: use your contacts, let’s have a real good crack at the top end. Aim for promotion. Really push those top two places if we can.

Phase three: take us up.

This is just how I see it. I think we’re aiming for promotion this season but it might well be next. That doesn’t mean we don’t do everything we possibly can to go up this season. The aim is always to go up. Personally I think this bloke could well do it this season.

TBH I can’t believe we’re having this conversation after two games. Two. Why not let them have this window at least? The doom and gloom. It’s just mad. We need some reinforcements obviously but I also think it needs some balance and perspective.

This chairman will back this manager and this manager will deliver. Just be patient.

Yes it is just two games but as an impartial observer you'd conclude that, at the moment, Boro look disorganized on and off the field, in need of half a dozen players and not close to signing anyone. It could resolve itself in the next three weeks or perhaps not.

Either way, is Wilder asking for players with abilities far in excess of what the budget allows, or do the right players not want to join, or is there some other reason for the blockage?

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 My sentiments exactly.
I want him to do well but we have to point out his failings otherwise we are all just rose tinted mugs surely ?
I can take a courageous defeat but we are getting rolled over without a fight and that’s down to the manager!

We are having this discussion because he can’t pick the right team and his tactics are being found out and he has no answers. I wish it wasn’t true…..but it is! No McNair or fry and those two paired up top who are exactly the same….then bizarre subs….hmmmmm
