Wilder post-match ‘We played really well’

No way do we lose that game with Neil Warnock in charge....
Why so Nobby? Is it because he would have been screaming in the 4th official's face like a petulant man child?

I'm not trolling you at all, but I am glad that man is nowhere near my beloved club. Our current manager is not the messiah, nor is he a naughty boy, but he's a better fit for us than the previous manager (in my opinion) 👍

I don't mind a bit of trolling kid, in fact I quite enjoy it 🤣 I still think given the backing Warnock gets us out of this league 👍

I made it two shots on target in 90 minutes - we were toothless up front, poor to pretty average in midfield. Under little or no pressure at the back although Fry looked short of fitness. Wilder probably cost us the late goal having subbed Bola for Bilongo who was baffled by the ball looping over his head for the run which led to the goal. Hackney looked the best of the kids and Boyd Munce is a long way from being first reserve in midfield - oh just a minute - right now he probably IS 😞
I think that's a good assessment. We controlled the second half without doing much. I thought Hackney was mom and looked the part, the goal should have been easily avoided if Bilongo moved his feet, but he looked like a young lad out of his depth. Boyd-munce definitely did not look anywhere near a first team player. The other 2 young subs fletcher and can't remember the other ones name had decent cameos. Smith was very average.

It felt like a cross between a pre-season friendly and a reserve game. Lack of sharpness at times, lack of quality at time.

Half the team were reserves, half were short of match time, so what we got was pretty much what we should have expected.

It was a 5/10 performance for me. We weren't great, but much the better team. Virtually all of the few chances they created were down to our errors. We were pretty much in control, which is a plus for the youngsters in midfield, but didn't create much which is a minus. It's a shame Bola went off, he'd been threatening a breakthrough. I liked Akpom's showing and Forss' positioning, Barnsley had to step up their fouling a lot. Other than that and seeing some players get game time, the only thing I came away enjoying were some quality long diagonal passes from the young lads in midfield, particularly Hackney. It wasn't just the quality of execution, it was the vision to see the option. When Wilder first came we were all impressed with the step up in intensity and purpose behind the short passing game, probing, moving defences around. That requires sharpness and last night we didn't have it, so having the nous to switch it up with 50 yard crossfield balls, well delivered, is a plus point.

For me, as with West Brom, if Watmore was anywhere near a competent forward we would have been home and dry. He fluffs one-on-ones, plays with his head down, runs down blind alleys and now tackles Paddy on the edge of the 18 yard box.

I loved him when he first came, but he's been woeful recently and I wouldn't mind if doesn't pull on the shirt again.

Yet again as for years, when we are on top, we don't score. When we have set pieces we don't threaten, don't throw everything at winning headers, we don't ever seem to get early shots away, we rarely seem to shoot with power (on target), we get in each others way up front (it is rare a forward makes intelligent runs to create an opportunity for others). Ultimately, we lack creativity, ideas and really just belief.

Thought Roberts was ring rusty too, he looked decent pre-season but a few bounced off him last night.

I'm not sure where each CB was playing early on either? They seemed to be almost rotating with each other through the 3 positions.

Frustating, not unexpected, not good enough, but with the lack of forwards and midfielders there was little more I expected.

Does Paddy and Bola coming off first mean they're starting on Sunday?

Harsh re Watmore, he was excellent last season....

I was at the game too, second half we created a few chances but by no definition did we play ‘really well’.
Agreed. The atmosphere felt more like the one when the Lionesses last played here, which added to the mediocrity of a non event. Great for the youngsters at £5 a pop, but not a real Boro match by any stretch of the imagination.

Dodds was only on for a short time, but I think he looked a player. I can see him taking Jones’s place at some point.

That must have been something that Wilder insisted on, it didn’t come as part of the game, nor did it come as 15 minute spells then change. It seemed to change every 5 minutes. It must be something they are working on for a reason and with Lenihan in mind.
