Wilder getting a grip

Strange noone seems to have picked up on this article. Wilder really does seem to be working hard to turn things around. The more he says the more you wonder how slapdash the approach to things has been.

It might take a while but hopefully he can turn us into a professional outfit and get us moving forward.

Every manager says the same thing, don't they?

It follows a predictable pattern. New Manager A says 'things were a disgrace before, they were a rablle, so I'm tightening things up'. That's followed by New Manager B saying 'It was a pressure cooker and they were miseable. The lads just want an arm round them, nothing wrong with a bottle of ketchup'. Only this time, it's the other way round and Wilder's A is following Warnock's B.

I think most managers say similar. It's a very easy 'go to' thing to say 'they are not fit' or the standards are awful etc.

I would be suprised if they were low standards under Warnock. He said that the players 'simply hadn't been coached' under woody (referring to Bola and Dijksteel). So they all do it.

I think Wilder has said he's inherited a good dressing room and that's rare. He said it's usually 'broken'. So warnocks purge of the bad ones has had an effect. They seem a pretty chirpy and friendly group.

That said we are clearly going through a massive overhaul in terms of recruitment and behind the scenes running of the club. I think it's clear Gibbo is basically thing a bit of a back seat and letting others run things.

I didn't think we had that much wrong under Warnock. I think we've not got a better manager who players a system that appears to suit the players we have. I never really felt we had enough 'Warnock types' to go full Warnock😂

well wilder is clearly doing something right,as the performances so far have been outstanding, thats clear for all to see. im very confident of making the playoffs, the next few weeks will be interesting, with lots of big games coming up and also knowing that we intend bringing in a player of two in key positions!!!

It's not uncommon for incoming managers to say this, but in this particular case I actually think it has some merit.

It does seem that the sports science side of things was largely ignored by NW, which CW has hinted at and one consequence of that being the amount of injuries we suffered under the former.

We also know that NW want a fan of stats either, which in today's game is a rarity and one I can't help thinking held is back.

Add to that the work he's doing to educate the players in the way he wants to play (which he says we're still some way from doing) and it's easy to see that on this occasion why he's putting in the hours.

"It’s fair to say that if Boro can pull off the signings they are hoping to make, then they could look a completely different prospect by the end of next month."

I wonder if Gibbo is going to go for it a bit?

I think it was clear that things weren't as tight as they should've been prior to Wilder coming in. Look at the way the same players are playing now; we make fewer mistakes, concede fewer goals, look a lot more solid, aren't blowing out of our ars*s after 70mins, seem to mark better at corners and set-pieces, look better on the ball, are picking up wins and not dropping points from good positions. The team just looks better.

It was obvious that by the end of Warnock's tenure, things had started to slide. It's evidenced by the number of appalling goals we conceded, the mistakes, the lack of marking and picking up opposition players properly, the number of times we scored first and then conceded or buckled completely. That's why he was replaced. The same set of players are starting to look like a completely different proposition now. We look better coached, organised and prepared.

I'd also say Fry has been quietly going about his business since getting back in, I didn't expect Bamba to be dropped, but he has always had a rick in him and the ball across the box may have been too much for Wilder to ignore?

At Bambas age he just can’t be expected to play every game. Still a key part of the squad. He’s also not your typical Wilder CB whereas Fry and McNair very much are.

Bambas been class since he arrived here & you rightly say Alzi his age is against him playing regularly, but along with UCHE, we have 2 very good professionals who will bide their time & give everything when called up, no matter how many minutes they're on the pitch

I think if wilder could design all the attributes he’d ever want in a central defender he’d look very much like McNair.

he’s a perfect fit for wilders style.
He's doing well, I prefer him on the right though. I wouldn't mind seeing Bola given a crack at LCB to be honest.

I still hate McNair folding his legs up and crumpling in a heap at the slightest contact, but just like Sex Panther, 60% of the time, it works every time.......

🙃

Nothing about McNair I can hate. He is our marquee player for me. Cant believe he is only 26. He is at his prime.

Yes I said the same the other week, I was criticised on here for suggesting warnock was dialling it in, well maybe I was close to the truth.
No. Definitely disagree. Wilder is doing a phenomenal job and there is a revolution going on through the club but Warnock really cared. Am not just saying that because he told me so but because he picked teams in the middle of the night. He turned around a club that was nose diving to relegation. Removed the high earners. Coaxed and coached those going backwards, Bola, Diksteel, added experience and youth and kept us all engaged with the club through covid lockdown.
Wilder is developing things superbly, breeding a winning mentality, instilling patterns of play, a settled side, laying down a plan for the future. He won't talk about Warnock's tenure, he says he won't go down that route of making easy criticism of what came before. He knows he has a tremendous platform to build from and a real opportunity here. I think we need to follow the example of Wilder and not see everyone of his moves as a reason to deride the very real progress made under Warnock.

I have absolutely no doubts that Warnock was good for the Club for all the reasons you say. I also believe his time was naturally coming to an end anyway and that short term feeling wasnt really beneficial for the Club going forward.
