Why wasn’t Watmore offered a new contract

He's done a good job for us but if we want to progress he's simply not good enough.
He's currently behind Akpom, Forss, Archer and Crooks. Ramsey would also be used in front of him I guess.

There's Coburn to come back in the mix and it sounds like he's had a positive loan spell. I would like to think Coburn would be in front of Watmore now. With more potential and probably on less money.

Hopefully we can say the same about Hoppe in a few months time.

His time has come. He's done a decent job for us but we are a better team now than we were when we signed him.

I can’t get my head around why Watmore wasnt offered a new contract here. He has got to be a useful squad member and chips in with useful goals. Top pro and endless energy. I just cant fathom why we just let him go.
The professional football coaches who train him and the medical/physio staff who look after his physical needs (and you would assume meet up to discuss the squad before every window), have signed probably six or seven forwards to play ahead of him since he arrived.

That suggests to me he was never seriously considered as a bankable asset we could rely on to get the number games and goals we needed to push for the autos.

I'm sure if he'd have been 100% happy to play a bit part here on limited monies and minutes he'd have probably stayed.

And at a few crucial moments in games he's missed absolute sitters or made very poor decisions that have cost us (I suppose most forwards do like), so I think we could easily improve on his output in goals/assists.

But not so easily replace his running, harassing and commitment from the bench which was a massive strength of his.

500k transfer fee and wages off the books (admittedly not very much) will probably cover Barlaser and Archers wages for the rest of the season...good business

I get all the valid reasons why it was probably best that we moved him on, but why to a play off rival?
He could quite feasibly score 8 goals or so for Millwall provided he is given game time.

Unlikely that a prem club would come in for him, and he would want to go a league one club, so its pretty inevitable he's going to a rival, have the Championship is in the play off battle.

We've got Archer on loan for rest of season who is proven in this league, and we'll have an improved Coburn back for next season (plus a summer transfer window) so I think it was a good deal all round.

Pretty sure Watmore couldn't be developed. Wouldn't listen. With no room for improvement.
So not only does it make sense to move him on it also sends a very powerful message to to everyone else.......... especially the players.
Managers live and die by these decisions. I have complete faith in Carrick.

Unlikely given his goal scoring record to date.

But even if he does, I am confident we have got better players playing in front of him in our team and Watmore would play a very small part in the remainder of the season. We were right to move him on and get him off the wage bill.

It's clear the Ramsey deal wouldn't have happened without moving Watmore on, so if he turns out to be a total flop maybe we will look back and say it was a mistake to let him go now and not the summer. But either way, if we are seriously looking at promotion thie season or next, we need better players than Watmore and he wouldn't have been getting a new contract.

Well Akpom and Coburn look up to it and I’m sure the club will invest again in the summer. If we keep the same quality of players we will largely get the same results 7-15th in the championship
Watmore looked up to it for his entire time with us. Coburn in flashes but hasn't really had a run. Akpom the last 6 months. However if he continues his form over the rest of the season is likely to be sold in the summer if we don't get promoted.

Because Carrick - who is doing a great job and seen him every day in training felt he had better options. Really liked Duncan and will forever think of him with great affection but separate sentiment from ambition. You have to trust Carrick’s judgement and at the moment he is getting a lot more right than he is wrong.

He gave a clue as to what might have been one reason for Duncan chosing to move on: asked about his transfer, Carrick said "[football].....its all about people. Not everyone can be a big part of the team". "I was sad to see Duncan go. I like him a lot....how he behaved in the group and also with me. We had some really good conversations and I still wanted to do what was best for Duncan".

Id Coburns been in flashes then so has Watmore, I like him, a good honest player, a bit of technical ability, but his finishing and decision making is all over the place. He can do some brilliant things, but he can be utterly wasteful in good areas of the pitch. That's why he's a lower/mid championship player.

Maybe we wanted to wait until we knew what division we would be playing in before offering a contract to someone who isn’t an regular starter, and Watmore didn’t want that uncertainty given the injury problems he’s had?
That makes sense to me. And Carrick probably ended up keeping muniz because he’s lost whatmore because why keep muniz but now he might get on the bench more often
However, out of the two you’d always keep watmore ahead of muniz therefore it sounds like watmore has asked for another contract extension and told to wait or look for options and got offered something he couldn’t turn down with millwall

It's just the nature of professional football and to a degree life in general. I don't pick up any Ill intent from either party.
Watmore probably wanted a longer contract and more playing time, Boro as a club couldn't guarantee that so it was best for both parties to part ways before his contract ran out so we got a bit of money for him and he got longer term security.
He will walk away from Boro with good memories and the fans will be grateful for his efforts and moments of magic.
