Why UNITED?

I've used my brain ( ie DuckDuck and Google) and find different origins - specifically in British clubs, where does the use of United come from.
I imagined it was small club mergers - but now doubt this ( even Man U wiki page does not explain this simple thing).
Any football experts know for sure?

Is for language research purposes - cheers

aye, history is very amendable - happens everywhere, amazing how easy it is for outright lies to win out.

Lots of different reasons

Some are called United because they're formed as mergers of clubs (Newcastle, Oxford)

Some are called United because they represent an entire town or district, often where multiple clubs used to represent (West Ham, Carlisle, Hartlepool, Sheffield United (via the cricket club of the same name))

Some are called United to distinguish them from a different club (Colchester, Leeds, Torquay)

Hartlepool is called United because it was representing the towns of Hartlepool and West Hartlepool before they were merged.

Carlisle is called United because they were initially founded to represent Shaddongate, a part of Carlisle, but they decided to represent the city as a whole after that.

As far as I can tell, Leeds are called United because they replaced a club called Leeds City in the league and I expect they had to use a different name.

Seems the merger one sounds the more plausible - rather than - ooh that sounds great- we'll copy that and add a reason later.

Proper Uniteds like Newcastle/Hartlepool/Oxfords as opposed to copy catty Leeds and Man
The language translation is referencing Man and Leeds ( yawn)- I'll get it changed to proper clubs loike Sheffield and pool

Is it true that Hartlepool used to be called Hartlepools United, because they represented two towns?
