Why not change it at half-time?

Difficult one. I’m definitely in the camp of changing it at least with 30 to go. Why not have Coburn and Lath playing a two up top?

But when your whole philosophy is possession based and a certain formation, do you throw that out the window because you are behind and having won 7 on the trot.

It's a balancing act between trusting the players and formation that have won 7 games in a row and a rubbish first half. With hindsight we should have changed it at half time as obviously leaving it until later didn't work but I can understand why Carrick wanted to stick for a while longer with the who and what that have been very successful.

I’m not sure we’ll ever see us play an old style two up top under Carrick. Not criticising, just an observation.

0-2 today, 0-2 a few months ago against a dog sh£&t QPR at home.

I think it really shows what Akpom brought to the team last year

The possession based style of play clearly wasn't working today, Stoke did a job on us again, so I feel it's reasonable to question why we didn't try something different in the 2nd half.

We questioned whether Carrick has a Plan B following the Coventry play-off defeat, and again today it didn't appear he knew how to change it, or just wasn't willing to.

He needs to develop a Plan B - today was yet another example of where he wasn't able to change things. I'm not sure if he's overthinking things but his subs seem to come much later than you'd expect.

i think we just missed the drive of hackney and craft of riley, we were always likely to be on the end of a defeat as we are not better than a few championship teams unless we have a full team out.

Stoke are capable as are probably 8 other teams of beating anyone on their day.

We were below par today and they played well for them i expect.

Move on

When I play fm2010 with Carrick's tactic.
I have problems when opposition play with much pressing and good play from the side.
Stoke exactly play like my opposition.
And especially when our midfield is not strong enough to turn the game around.
I think the only thing that can be done is retreating to play more defensively.
I know this is not the nature of our game style.
But at the time we were inferior in the quality of the players.
A draw is better than a loss.
This is why Cosberan and Neil will keep the balance in defense and attack. Rather than focusing only on the offensive game.
Both of them use the same formation as us.

Cosberan?

If Carrick is unwilling to amend his formation / tactics when it is clearly necessary is somewhat concerning. I respect he has his principles, style and methods, but him and his teams will always be found wanting in the big games or when he comes up against canny managers.

Robins learnt from the first play off game at Coventry of how to nullify our strengths in the 2nd game. Carrick, played the same way which I can understand from the start but displayed an inability to affect and change in game. It did seem the was a ‘rabbit in headlights’ at that moment, in what was a huge huge game.

There was talk of him getting Manager of the Month 24 hours ago.

One result doesn’t make a manager and one defeat doesn’t condemn him. The concerns shown in this thread about Carricks abilities seem a bit harsh frankly.

I'd have changed it and switched to 4-4-2 for the 2nd half.

Djiksteel for VDB, Lath for Howson and drop Crooks into midfield alongside Barlaser.
I though VDB was copping a lot of flack due to how Jones stunk the entire place out and was missing in action in almost every part of the game.

We miss Tommy Smith because he manages to overcome the long list of Jones shortcomings.

Both Jones and Coburn should have been pulled at half time. It was obvious to almost everyone that it wasn’t working.

Jones maybe didn’t have his best game but I thought he was pretty decent in general

Carrick rabbit in the headlights? He was level headed for the first 7 games when we hadnt won a game. He will have been equally as calm yesterday when we were 2 goals down.

There are some idiots on this board.

Did you read the post?

His reference was to the second play off game?

Maybe a bit quick to call someone else an idiot?

It showed what Hackney has brought to the side this year as well tbh.

Carrick’s approach to subs is like for like position wise and he tends to give the lads who he picked initially at least three quarters of the game. It wouldn’t be my approach but then my experience is Championship Manager 99/00, Football Manager on a Spectrum and five-a-side on a Thursday.

I think yesterday will have shown Dijksteel is ready to be right back, Rogers may be worthy of a start and Josh might need resting. Perhaps we also need to give someone else a chance in the Hackney role when he’s out, though with our current injuries options are limited.

Yesterday his hands were tied as our go to players just weren’t there namely Hayden and Riley.
Posted on another thread but feel it applies here.

"Stoke played a pretty high line and Coburn had two or three on him most of the time, if there was a quick runner in a Lath or Silvera playing on the deepest defenders shoulder, close to Coburn, it would have definitely given them more to think about than the 'support' Crooks gave him when attacking, and the balls from Greenwood and Jones out wide."

It clearly wasn't working and Jones and Greenwood had offered very little in incisive attacking support/chances created, Coburn looked isolated and we lacked any real pace or movement, we were two nil down and going nowhere. I don't see the harm in trying both of our first team strikers playing together when you're desperate for a goal. Say Coburn and Lath up top with Rodgers in a free role behind them to pick up balls and run at the defence.
