Why is this man getting released?

Raped and murdered two girls.
As far as I'm concerned he forfeited his freedom when he carried out these horrific crimes.
Imagine being a relative of one of those poor girls!
He should rot in prison for rest of his life with no hope of release.

Double rape and murder

Did you read it?

He was sentenced to life in 1988 and was eligible for parole after thirty years. If he was to be sentenced to a whole life term it would have had to have been back then.

I really don't care what he was originally sentanced to. A crime so heinous deserves a full life term with zero chance of release.

But he was sentenced in 1988? It would have had to have been then. The only legal grounds to keep him in were if the parole board had made an error in reviewing his case, they had not (the ministry of justice even appealed it), he met the criteria.

I get what you are saying and agree he deserved a full life term, but it had to be done at the time of sentencing.

Horrible crime but above poster is right, you can’t just go giving people retrospective sentences

hopefully he gets caught planning something and ends up back in the banger

Totally wrong that this specimen was not made to spend the rest of it's life in prison
Totally agree, but the sentence handed down is what he's served - he should however be monitored, made to wear a tag that he can never take off and have to report to some police station every 24 hours - isn't that possible?

It’s worth remembering that he was sentenced to LIFE with a minimum of 30 year (or whatever it was), he is only eligible for parole after his minimum term. The parole board don’t have to let him out.

I appreciate whole life terms were not available at the time he was sentenced however the parole board could simply say “we are not satisfied that you are no longer a danger to society” and keep him inside.

If the sentencing at the time wasn’t sufficient (because whole life terms were not available) I don’t see why this turd should benefit from his good fortune.

In this case and others as serious I don't believe anybody can be rehabilitated. Someone that rapes and murders two girls is fundamentaly evil. Time will never change that. There is nothing that can be done to change that and no tests or assessments that can prove otherwise.
The man was given life. Life should mean life in this case.

"He pleaded guilty to both murders in September 1987 and was sentenced to life in January 1988. The judge said the killings were "particularly sadistic" and he doubted Pitchfork would ever be released"

It’s more complex than that. People who rape and murder usually do so from trauma early in their life whatever that may be. It distorts what they think is normal. To say these people are beyond rehabilitation is wrong.

the crimes are heinous, and these people should only ever be released into society if the are deemed safe to do so. This should include therapy that is completed, but I doubt these people are given that

"Pitchfork admitted to exposing himself to more than 1,000 women, a compulsion that began in his early teens. He later progressed to sexual assault and then to strangling his victims. Pitchfork said this was in order to protect his identity. The Crown rejected this, viewing the motivation for the strangulations as ‘perverted sadism’.[9] During his interviews with the police he admitted his crimes, but lied about the level and nature of the violence he had inflicted on his victims.[10] He pleaded guilty to the two rapes and murders in addition to another incident of sexual assault, and was sentenced to life imprisonment."

I also assume he'll be on the sex offenders register and be released under certain conditions that if he breaks he'll be back in.

This is often the case but not In pitchforks case. The bloke deserves to stay out of society.
