Why don’t you get pitch invasions in American sports

NBA is getting concerned at certain recent incidents. The Boston Celtics fan who threw a water bottle at a player this week was summarily arrested by the police and security.

Went to watch the Phoenix again last weekend. This time at Eden Park because their home ground in Wellington had been booked out for a food show!

22000 was a decent crowd. Only beaten in the whole A League by their crowd last week in Wellington. There were no away fans as their opponents Perth Glory play 6 time zones away!

Having said all that and because it was new for Aucklanders to watch a live football match there were a lot of kids and families taken which was great to see. I ddn’t care that groups were chanting “Lets ago Phoenix Lets Go” in a very American way.

There are enough Phoenix fans who are European origin who make the Yellow Fever section sinilar to the English atmosphere. Some genuinely funny chanting at the Aussies. But in the end the passion isn't quite at the same level as British/ European football fans.

The closest I’ve been to it was twickenham. I used to work in the automotive industry and got tickets to an England match with one of the dealers, they had a full spread out with beers pre match and then hot chilli con carne post match with more beers, all on pop up tables.

Plenty of others “tailgating” but it’s not quite the same when it’s mainly champers and cucumbers sandwiches out of a Range Rover!

I think the lack of tailgating parties compared to the US is due to their very relaxed attitude to drink driving compared to ours.

"Few beers and a couple of shots of fireball and then I'll drive my wife home in our huge Ford F150" - totally bonkers !

I’d imagine it’s just a cultural thing

just like we don’t get people in the stadium car park in lawn chairs running a BBQ pit and dishing out beers. Instead we have a burger van
It used always to be a feature of rugby internationals. Haven't been to one recently so perhaps someone can confirm.
Pitch invasions haven't been routine since John Hickton was scoring.

Edit: someone just did!

Any game where a penalty awarded is announced with ear bleeding volume as

“ a direct 12 yard PK after unauthorized aerial defensive challenge in the offensive attack zone “

should be avoided !

Fan culture in general is so different in US sports to the UK, specifically, football culture.

I love the US, and love baseball, but other than that American sports, and the lack of fan culture, leave me cold.

I think there is a difference between fan culture & stadium culture in US sports.

In the stadium it is equivalent to getting corporate tickets to a football match you aren't interested in. People are watching the game but they are also chatting with the people they are with, getting drinks, getting food. They are spectators & want to be entertained, the mascots, t-shirt cannons, cheerleaders, fly overs, the stadium announcer & music all add to the spectacle & make it an event you want to be at.

But in bars I've had some pretty decent experiences watching fairly anodyne games.

I'd love a pre match bbq pit. Ribs / Brisket and smoked sausage all smothered in secret recipe bbq sauce. It would get me out of a pub and up to the Riverside 2hrs before kick off😂

I fecking love a plate of proper American style BBQ. Slow cooked over 12+ hours and falling off the bone.....its just an overdose on meat.

east coast [NFL] fans are usually the ones who will invade the pitch, barrack the players and behave badly, but if you follow College football or sports in general they have a tradition of storming the field.

It's a bit more than that now. the car park is taken over to huge bars and food outlets and even a stage. I don't think even the Rosebine has tailgating now.
