Why did the democrats vote to remove the speaker?

Don't really follow US politics a great deal so I wonder if someone can help me out here.

As I understand it the motion was put forward by obnoxiously right wing trumpettes.
I have also read that the speaker helped the democrats avoid a government shutdown and assisted biden in getting funding through for the Ukraine.
I'm baffled as to why they all voted with 8 hard right nutcases. Surely they want someone they can work with. What am I missing here?

I was wondering the same thing (am living in the US and trying to follow politics, but sometimes stuff confuses me).

From what I can infer from reading various stuff online, it seems the removal of McCarthy is a good thing for Dems because it means more and more infighting and instability in the Republican party. Plus (and please someone correct me if I'm wrong) it now opens up the possibility of the next Speaker being a Dem. The loonies in the "Freedom Caucus" will never be able to install a new Speaker whose beliefs are in line with theirs, as they'd never have anywhere near enough votes. I think moderate Republicans will be very frustrated with this turn of events as it makes the GOP look even more disorganised and divided than they already were.

Yeah, basically the GOP are tearing themselves apart and the Dems voting to remove McCarthy will work in their favour as right now there is absolutely no chance the Republicans will be able to agree on one candidate.

The Democrats are just exposing the dumpster fire that is the GOP.
The ultimate aim will be to stop Trump and his drive towards authoritarianism and by throwing the GOP into chaos again they are incentivising the moderates to start growing a spine and purging the GOP of these right wing nutjobs that they've so far tolerated out of fear of Trump's base.
It'll be really hard to elect a new speaker and the long game for the Democrats will be for the chaos to allow them to flip the house by winning the seats currently held by the likes of Santos, Bobert and a few others.
