Why did Charlton leave Boro for Sheff Wed?

Seems odd to go from a top flight side to one in the third division. Clough did the same thing leading derby to the title, then dropping two divisions to join Brighton. Was this just the sort of thing that happened in the 70s.
The only thing I can imagine is that managers weren't sacked so frequently then or were so well paid so they just took the first job that offered them a decent wage.

He didn't leave for Sheff Weds, he unfortunately decided 4 years was enough at one club & left,, later taking up his position at Hillsborough

Big Jack was on £200 pw at the Boro when the average wage was £40.60p he said he`d stay 4 seasons and he did and never signed a contract. (he didnt with any club) He was at Sheff Wed for 6 seasons, and Newcastle for 1 as he got sick of the grief from supporters. Met Big Jack in 74/75 and got a lift and back to Hutton Rd 4 of us, and was coached by him after won the league and cup and played the town boys Stockton schools Malcolm Danbytook us. Also got into a lot of bother nicking off to watch them train 4 of us, but it was worth it.

As said he thought 4 years was enough - he left in May 1977 and didn't take up the Sheff Wed job till November 1977.

Newcastle were his boyhood club but he left soon after joining because they were criticising him a lot and even booing him for playing defensive football. Jack was quite sensitive to criticism.
