I posted this on the thread but I think it is a question in itself

I’ve never understood why our famed academy has yet to produce one credible striker ( yes a couple have gone on to other clubs like wyke etc) for the BORO first team not one I think Andy Campbell was the last but he’s about 35 now and wasnt really a regular either.

countless wingers and central defenders full backs but ZERO strikers.

you have to wonder why

And be classed as a first team player ?

Andy Campbell ??

There’s been a few who’ve gone on to have a decent career in the game, like Campbell, Charlie Wyke and Danny Graham, but they had senior strikers strikers ahead of them so were never really going to get much of a chance.

I‘d absolutely love a young local lad to come through who turns out to be a prolific goal scoring machine.

But in all that time we have produced countless wingers to play in the top flight and some have Even played for their country

Brunt
Downing
He who shall not be named
Reach

yet in all that time not one striker... not one

Good ones who done well at the Boro & elsewhere, good question, two names that always spring to mind

David Mills & David Hodgson

35?!?! Danny Graham is approaching 35.

Campbell will be in his early 40s

Campbell played at Liverpool in a fans shirt in 1996. 24 years ago so he definitely is older than 35 (unless we only had kids in shirts at the ground )

I think this is the hardest position to give someone who’s inexperienced a good run especially when we play one up front, as we tend to rely on our strikers for the goals with no support from midfield.

It would be a big gamble for the manager to do that, it’s a bit different if it’s a defender playing alongside an experienced player, or a winger who can be backed up by the full back. With a striker, especially in our team, it can be a lonely place.

Defenders galore as well. Hardest position to break through, lots of academy players started out as strikers in their younger days and get converted.

That’s seems to be the issue as downing etc talk about how they played up front in their youth.

IMHO, Willie Maddren could have been a top striker, but he always chose his preffersd position was CB

Charlie Wyke is the current one - he's not scoring a lot, but plays for Sunderland in Division 1.

Danny Graham was brought in at 16/17 and has had a good career at Carlisle, Watford, Sunderland, Blackburn etc.

Tav is doing well and is an attacking player.

Reach came in from Gateshead College so I don't think we can class him as an academy player.
