When did this become the norm?
What's wrong with school disco's and leavers parties?
Why the clamour for American style limos, tuxedos and prom dresses? Parents getting into debt just to buy a dress or a suit for their kids....
We're becoming more American every day. grammar, spelling, proms...

Excuse me everyone - just having a rant!!!!!!

(Thanks for listening!)

Must admit my first thought was BBC Proms as well :)

We had a prom at our school, given that I left twenty years ago they've been around for a while I think.

Used to be called school discos in my time. My kids time they were called school balls. I have never heard of the term used here until the 2000s when the influence of US TV became rife.

Yeah we didn't have a 'prom' either. Just a meal and a disco at Hunley Hall. And it was crap.

Kids grew up watching American TV and liked how proms looked, it went from there.

We had one when I was leaving school in 2009, wasn't a huge lover of it but I can't see how a school disco would have been much different, minus the outfits.

Tbf am a bit envious that we didn't have them, the internet or more than 4 TV Channels!

Just an excuse for oneupmanship now. Who can out do who.

We were happy with a school disco, Old English cyder and unsuspecting teachers being DJs.
In 83 we were literally seconds away from getting the B side of Army Life by The Exploited played, until Mrs Brown read the label of the record.

I had 1 child leave school in 1999- school disco. 1child leave in 2001 school disco cancelled because alcohol found at the previous year disco, next one had a school prom in 2007. So sometime between 2002-06

My son went to a school prom in 2003 - he looked like Tom Hanks in BIG with his suit on. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

A couple of girls in our school flew in a helicopter to their prom. What a waste of money

School Disco’s were crap! Absolute toilet! Standing on the wall in your best tracksuit top. Some secret Moonwalking to a Michael Jackson song then pogoing to the Europe’s ‘final countdown’ on the ‘dance floor’ - everyone stunk of salt and vinegar crisps.. gel and sweat made your eyes sting.

In the movies the proms looked ACE!! Back to the Future, Grease.. we were all being ripped off!

Is there much of a difference between a prom and a ‘school ball or disco, other than wearing a suit/dress? Obviously some go way over the top but they must have done that when it was just a ‘disco’ as well?

We had a prom but it was nowt spesh, basically a meal and a disco followed by going round someone’s house for an all-nighter and cheap booze.
