Who should we have never sold?

Add David Armstrong to that.
Summer of 81 was an absolute sickener with Craig, Proc and Spike all being sold.
To follow up the following summer by selling Hodgy was the final kick in the balls.
4 years later we were in the third division and in administration.

Enter Colin Henderson, Graham Fordy and Henry Moskowitz, Bruce Rioch and Tony Mowbray.
I can remember being stood on the South Terrace during that awful 81/82 season. I think we'd just conceded and someone shouted ...... "where's the midfield?", a voice from behind answered ..... "Southampton, Nottingham and Liverpool". 😐

I agree he certainly shouldn't be immune to criticism and has made more than a few mistakes but I think there may be someone important you're leaving out there.😄
Gibson only got control in 93. He got the club for a million quid.
Before that he was an enthusiastic cheerleader, with ambition and no money.

I guess none are easy decisions to make, some out of the club's hands
That’s why I picked Morrison as here was a local who came through the ranks and had a credible goal record and we sold him for a pittance never really replaced him.

He then went on to play almost his entire career in the top flight and represented Scotland at senior level.

Madness.

In terms of importance it has to be Schwarzer, Rochemback, Boateng and Cattermole. Not because any of them were amazing at that point in their careers but because the season we went down those were the 2 positions we were utterly devoid of competent footballers.

Didn’t we end up playing Bates in centre mid a few times?

Out of the players that we didn’t need to sell and I was devastated to see leave it would be Juninho to Celtic but I guess you can’t really argue with what McClaren did the next 2 seasons.

Always thought Schwarzer engineered his moved away from us. Looked nowhere near the keeper he once was until signing for Fulham and then back to his best.
Give over man.
Gibson wouldn't pay Schwarzer the going rate, when others were. It was very much a personal intervention.

Bates played about the last 7 or 8 games of the season in centre midfield alongside GoN. We were absolutely terrible.

His performances in the last season with us nowhere near the standard we saw at Fulham. Gibbo may have believed his performances had also dropped so wouldn’t pay him the going rate.

So many…….just a few that spring to mind; Bamford, Morrison, Hignett (I know we gave him away, but still), Barmby, Glover, Currie, Proctor, Armstrong and Mills!

Losing Cattermole and Boateng in the same close-season was madness.
(I'd need to check exact timings but the transfers felt close together in my head)
A situation compounded when Cattermole came back to play against us for Wigan in 2009 - he was at his most menacing and managed to smash both of Diddy Digards glass knees.
Cattermole intimidated our whole spineless team that day :(

Didier Digard........ oh my goodness we've made some bad recruitment decisions over the years:mad:

Not really sales, so probably shouldn't be on here, but we missed both Geremi and Zenden when they both left. Admittedly Geremi was only on loan and Zenden came to the end of his contract (like Viduka and a couple of others mentioned above).
