Who skipped off work, school to watch the mighty Boro on the tuesdya afternoon 29th February 1972 in an FAC 5th round replay at Ayresome Park
Due to the powercuts we were unable to play evening matches so decided to play the replay in a midweek schoolday afternoon, unherad of before, or since

My dad wrote me a letter to take to my junior school, St Francis, asking for permission to allow me to go to the game (y) & so, along with my younger brother we got tickets for the game, boys end

With the crowd of 39,671 I would imagine works had boat loads of Boro fans phoning in sick, my dad included, unless he was to be off anyway:unsure:

Unfortunatly, the sick bug that was going around Teesside that day probably found its way in to the Boro dressing room as we were soundly beaten 3-0 by Best, Charlton, Law, Kidd & Co & with that, another wembley visit dream over & new suits were withdrawn from Stewarts ordering books, for another 12 months at least

The Boro team that was beaten this bay back in 72 & Stans final Ayresome park FAC tie

Jim Platt
John Craggs
Gordon Jones - Final Ayresome Park FAC tie
Willie Maddren
Stuey Boam
Bill Gates - Final FAC match
Nobby Stiles
Eric McMordie

John Hickton

Seen us beat after drawing away. They murdered us this time around, for a lot of mates at school it was their first game, there were only two of us ST holders. They used to send cup tickets to ST holders those days.

We were told in assembly that teachers would guard the playing field at dinner time. I walked out of the main gate 20 mins before 😎

mam wrote me a note for the next day giving her permission for my absence, in case of repercussions

bobby Charlton ran the whole show that afternoon, he was awesome

I was behind the goal in the Holgate end when Best shot and scored. The ball came off his foot in a straight line towards me.

Went to Southlands school.
If you had a match ticket they gave you afternoon off.
Well beaten that day like.

I was a final year apprentice and was allowed to work 6 till 1, no lunch break, to be able to go. I also got caught on local news camera queuing for a ticket in works time. Next day the foreman goes ‘Get your ticket then? He’d only seen it on TV. Ooops!

I was there and remember how we were a bit outclassed. They had players like George Best who shot at goal with no backlift and unsportingly gave us no warning of their intentions.

Wasn't this the era when we had power cuts in different zones across Middlesbrough and it really affected ones life ? I used to drink in a club on Marton Road and when the usual blackout came about 9pm, we decamped across the road, pint in hand to the White Rose where the lights were still on. The problems of the drinking class.

I remember the 1970s vividly as I was just becoming a teenager. The power cuts and strikes filled the whole place with despondency and uncertainty here in the NE. However, being hardy souls we managed, as we always will. We are survivors. It was a different time and era. I can still smell, and taste, the smoke from the coal fires on our council estate, and the sense that we were so different to the rest of the country here on Teesside. I remember during the Queens jubilee in 1977 Prince Charles visited the area and to make the sight more pleasant for his arrival helicopter the council freshly painted the houses and fences near the football field - Gee thanks, Guv. That reinforced to me the class divide more than anything. And lines from a poem by Philip Larkin captured the mood of the time for me ''And dark towns heap up the horizon, none of this cares for us'
