We were linked with Motherwell's CF Willie Pettigrew
The summer of 1975 we were supposably be interested in him for £200k, the following summer 1976 the price was £300k

Remember it well. A goal every other game for Motherwell. Thought he would move to England.

Dundee United paid just £100,000 for him, d cent career there too.

Only five caps for Scotland though.

After he retired he became a greengrocer.

You would think he would’ve have been worth taking a gamble on for £100,000 wouldn’t you, Erimus? Alf Wood was cheaper though!

I suppose to get it in perspective Boersma only cost £72,000 I think.
Boersma been our record signing at the time & a major disappointment

1976 big Jack was offered a young Scottish striker plying his trade for a sum of £100k
Big Jack thought it too much for a young lad who hadn't proved it at the highest level, the player in question later signed for Aston Villa, Andy Grey

Have to say I was gutted by this at the time, Jack‘s biggest issue was he was too careful with money. We were 1 striker off glory and winning something special. Jack’s only issue was his tightness, speculate to accumulate. David Cross another example that I believe cost us real glory.

I didn't know about Willie Pettigrew carer after football until foggy posted, thanks for that foggy
I often wondered why we were linked with him 2 summers running

😇

I remember it was £200k in 1976

Big John was slowing up and no longer an option, Alan Foggon the same

Alan Willey was not developing enough to be top flight striker, same for Malcolm Smith

We only had David Mills. Tony McAndrew was even tried as a striker

£200k was a lot of money in 1976/7 - the top fee paid was around £333k for anyone. (Super Mac?)

We came very close to Ray Hankin for £165k plus Malcolm Smith.

The £100k for Pettigrew was in 1979 when his form had dropped.

Thanks red, I don't recall us after him when John Neal was manager, unless I've read it wrong

Around the time that Pettigrew was being talked about as a transfer target, Andy Gray was available. Gray was not cheap, but a bargain buy.

Jack Charlton admitted it after he left - said his biggest regret at Boro was that he was too tight to buy a striker!

Glad we didnt sign Cross, he was poor.
Marriner would have been a different story if we had got him from Plymouth.
