Who has been the best / most influential band of the last 30 years?

I think Oasis were very influential at the time (albeit few of the bands they influenced did much).

By the end of the decade the commercial tied had turned towards Coldplay, Travis et al - themselves very influenced by Radiohead.

Absolutely love that early stuff, wish I'd seen them at that stage. Still hoping for some sort of official vinyl release of their earlier, jazzier moments.

The Strokes' ascent was definitely a "lightbulb moment" for the Libertines but I think also played with the Vines quite early on who may have had an impact as well? The Hives were quite well known in certain circles at that point and had been going for a few years in Sweden by that point.
They released new versions of Bucket shop, love on the dole, 7 deadly sins and lust of the libertines as bonus tracks on their third album. I'd still love to hear a re-recorded version of Hooray for the 21st century, such an underrated song.

Didn't realise they'd played with the Hives. I know they went to see the Strokes live in London and it was a turning point, and then they ended up supporting them.

Some basic outlines:

• Bands formed since 1990
• Three or more members
• Probably 'success' on both sides of the Atlantic

For me personally, it's hard to look past the Foo Fighters, I guess some would say Nirvana but didn't they form in the late 1980s?

Others would say Oasis, but did they really 'crack' America? They are mainly a one-hit wonder for Wonderwall

Then you have the 1990s - early 2000's pop punk stuff - Greenday, Blink 182, etc - they were all successful and quite influential

The same could be said for the nu-metal era - Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, etc

I guess you could also mention bands like the Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, Muse, etc as well

Paste pick out Foos top ten songs. There is about two I think are great a couple of others that are ok. Not that I am posting for that reason. Just to let you compare their and your top ten. Learning to Fly would be my number one.

They are definitely not the best Foo Fighters / Dave songs in my opinion – here’s my Top 10 ….. in no particular order:
  • All My Life
  • The Pretender
  • Learn to Fly
  • Everlong
  • Monkey Wrench
  • Best of You
  • Times Like These
  • Breakout
  • Generator
  • This is a Call

I think Oasis are the only band to rival them in the past 30 years, in my opinion - I would probably see Oasis over the Foo Fighters if I had to decide though

How can anyone say oasis or foofighters whilst undoubtedly popular they havent done anything thats groundbreaking or original at all. A bit like suggesting mud or sweet instead of bowie or roxy music for the 70s.
I would say radiohead massive attack, chemical brothers, prodigy, primal scream for screamadelica alone, nirvana undoubtedly had huge influence but i am not particularly a fan.libertines and strokes probably less influence but none the less fantastic bands

What genre was Radiohead, where they influenced more than others?

The closest band I can think to them is maybe Sigur Ros, but that's not to say they were influenced by Radiohead and certainly not so much early Radiohead (Pablo Honey, Ok Computer, The Bends etc), as Sigur Ros were going before Kid A, when Radiohead went a bit less mainstream.

Most see as their best, as the first three albums, and most lost interest after that.

I like both Radiohead and Sigur Ros mind, but I just don't see their influences in anything else, not compared to what else was around then.
Radiohead started as rock genre but subsequently became genre less from one album to the next. I dont think many can touch them in terms of muscial diversity.

Yep, going straight from "best of the Walker Brothers" to Tilt makes for an interesting afternoon.

I think he was always interested in the avant garde (Seventh Seal from Scott 4 references Bergman) and as he got older decided he probably had less to lose and immersed himself in it fully.

I would loved to have been an exec at the meeting when that record was first mooted.

Incidentally, I attended a "tribute night" years ago where songs from Drift and Tilt were performed by other artists - Damon Albarn, Jarvis Cocker etc. It wasn't confirmed until later that Walker was there in the audience and I have subsequently been gifted a signed copy of Scott 2 from that very evening. Probably my most prized possession (y)

A friend of mine met SW at that gig and was told that the released version of Tilt wasn't what he originally wanted. He wrote down the intended playing order. I've listened to it and it makes it a far more coherent piece of work. I'll see if I can hunt the order down and post it on here.

Wow, that would be great. Cheers.
