Which club are the Boro most like?

I feel we're very similar to Southampton and Stoke.

We've all won one trophy each, averaged similar attendances over the years and spent roughly the same amount of seasons competing in the top flight.
Our historical average is 3 k more than Stoke and 2kmore than Southampton. Was surprised at thay

Depends on the definition of big club really? FA cups and league wins from when before most people were born are things fans of those clubs are rightly proud of, but are they really that relevant now? I'd argue that Huddersfield's (for example) historical titles have no bearing on their profile or "size" today.

More recent history though probably does matter. We're a "smaller" club than we were 10 years ago, but our infrastructure is still top class and we have a reasonable profile. We know when we get things right on the pitch we get good crowds and it feels like a fairly big club. When we're struggling it feels like we're much smaller.

So yep, really hard to compare because a lot of the factors you'd take into account are quite changeable.

But I'd also agree that I don't really care. Let the likes of Leeds and the mackems obsess over who they're bigger than, doesn't really matter does it? Some measure of success on the pitch and a full stadium is all I really want for us.

Ive always thought of my club Boro as a unique club. Never compared to anyone else. I know this to be true because I have little interest in any other games. Ive only ever attended 4 non Boro games in over 50 years.
And it was never a good experience.

I kick every ball on a boro match. We are unique because Teesside and Teesside people are very unique. I choose to celebrate that.

Re: Southampton - Very similar choices in manager (obviously without the large turnover) would it be fair to say we have went for the better value option each time? Southampton's choices look stronger on paper.. but what have they achieved for the club? Have they underachieved on the whole or have our lot overachieved?

Graeme Souness vs Bryan Robson
Glenn Hoddle vs Terry Venables
Gordon Strachan vs Gordon Strachan
Harry Redknapp vs Steve McClaren
Mark Hughes vs Gareth Southgate
Nigel Pearson vs Tony Mowbray
Claude Puel vs Aitor Karanka
Ronald Koeman vs Garry Monk
Alan Pardew vs Tony Pulis
Mauricio Pochettino vs Neil Warnock

I can't see many similarities apart from the odd one there.
Souness, Redknapp, Hughes and Puel were all experienced managers and the ones you compare them to were first timers.

It's the best I could do seen as we take on so many first timers. It's the closest I could get between the choice So'ton made and the one boro made. Often more experienced and established.. but more effective?

Good thread and from all the suggestion it has to be Stoke. Similar features for certain.

It's not Stoke, in terms of recent transfers we are close. Like when they bought Huth and Tuncay from us.. we seem at a similar lever right now we. But you could have said that about us and Spurs in the 2000s..

Derby , forest and Blackburn for me , similar size clubs who won trophies with good management and recruitment . Our turn soon I hope.
Sheff U , Wolves and Norwich in the premier are similar also i.e. If we were there we would get similar crowds

Look at the likes of:
Leicester, Wolves, Burnley, Sheffield, Brighton, Watford, Bournemouth. Think of managers like Pearson & Hughton and players like Traore, Matic, Kanye, Maguire, Lindelof.. and just think what could have been. How far away were were? How close did we come to being a top Prem team?

They're not like
Why not?

Leeds were the big hitters in the 70s. Loads of support from the surrounding towns and cities like Wakefield, Harrogate, Selby, York, Pontefract, Castleford, Goole.

Villa is the biggest club in the second city.

Similar fan base for both.

Similar stadiums.
