Which club are the Boro most like?

A few of the club's we're being compared to have had some periods of success, but also very long periods in the wilderness. Stoke had a decent run in the premier League like us, but didn't have the same European success and I'd struggle to recall them finishing above us much in the 20 years prior to their promotion. A difficult comparison to try to make though.
The likes of Forest or Derby would probably be a good comparison for 90% of the time but obviously they had those peaks we didn't match.
Norwich, Blackburn, Palace would be decent shouts. Sheff Utd anyone?

You can’t compare Leicester to us now when they have won the premier league and had champions league football and will probably have it next season. I think all atypical was doing was comparing to it who are we most like now, I think Stoke, Southampton , Norwich and Birmingham are decent comparisons with Stoke and Southampton being the most alike

I would have to say Southampton. It's a tough one. They had some great players in the 90's, great academy, similar success level, same sized stadium.. probably the same sort of pull sponsorship wise. Both had Maddo!!

I'd agree Zorro, we are not the small club some try to make us out to be.

Norwich, Cardiff, Swansea, Charlton aren’t small clubs. They’re clubs who are fairly consistently in the top two divisions, like us. If we’re going to split hairs, we are bigger than some of them, but I also think the fact people have to assert that we’re a “big club” tells its own story. Personally, I don’t care about being seen as a big club, but horses for courses.

Agree, it was more a general point really. All the comparisons probably have equal flaws and validity.

In reality it’s an unanswerable question. Plenty of clubs will be “similar” but as Block said, there are none that are even close to being “the same”.

There are pros and cons towards any argument. I mean we could say Sheff Wed, should the fact they were so good in the 1920s debunk that? Dunno 🤷🏼‍♂️

It's a difficult one as some clubs have huge history but have no recent success. Preston, Huddersfield and Blackpool were huge clubs back in the day but have done precious little since. Then you have clubs like Palace who have no pretty much no history, won nothing but are regulars in the top flight. Look at Bolton... regularly toyed with them, now they're in the bottom tier!

West Brom . I don’t look at West Brom and think there are bigger than us. They are a good club imo and of a similar nature to us
Fair comparison.
Especially how similar the way the two sides went in the 80's. Both had wonderfully talented teams that were sold off, and both ended up in div 3.

I never said we’re a big club but we are definitely not a small one either.
