A lot of these have been down to preference and form rather than injuries.
We made 3 unforced changes last game for instance. Edmondson, Giles and Travers in for Glover, Fry and Borges.

Obviously we have had some injuries but nowhere near as bad as last season. There were weeks we could barely field a team last season, yet we are still performing at the same level.
Travers is down to the injuries to both Dieng and Brynn, leaving us with the our 3rd choice keeper until a replacement could be found. if Brynn was fit we wouldn’t have signed travers and we wouldn’t need to make yet another defensive change

Giles is preferential, yes

Edmundson was not in the side for two games because of Ipswich recalling him, so he returned last game.

Most of our changes I’ve highlighted are not through preference. Dijksteel only came back in when Ayling got injured. Rav always plays when fit but has been in and out. Fry isn’t at his
Beat because he hasn’t played for 9 months. He is being integrated back in. Everyone is fit and we have a back four of Ayling, rav, Lenihan, Giles(Borges before signing him). That’s pretty obvious

Our best form under Carrick when he first arrived, we barely changed the side. Same 10 or 11 every match.

We weren’t left with our third-choice ‘keeper until a replacement could be found, Carrick had Dieng back fit in January and openly said Glover would stay in the team on merit. That was his choice.

You can acknowledge these things while also acknowledging we have suffered with injuries.

To a degree, but we don’t know how fit Dieng was. The fact he broke down pretty quickly shows how they were right to cautiously return him to the first team squad…travers came in when both Dieng and Brynn were ruled out. He would not be here if either of those players were fit

But what’s more important than any of that is that Carrick hasn’t chosen to have 21 different combinations and never play the same defence for more than 4 games. That’s a fact and an influential one

He broke down with a completely unrelated injury though. Unless Carrick was lying repeatedly when he talked of Dieng having a muscle injury through autumn/winter.

Let’s see what he does now then, now he has his first-pick left-back, his favourite centre backs in Rav and Edmundson, a good ‘keeper and Ayling to pick from. If you’re right he’ll pick these players every match now.

I don’t know, but it’s largely irrelevant travers is here because Brynn and Dieng are out for the season. So it’s another enforced change. Glover was always a cheap backup option for two or three games not for half a season

I don’t think that he does have his favoured CBs, Lenihan did well for him in his first half season. But fry isn’t decent enough. I’d like to see Travers-Ayling-Fry-Rav-Giles and play them for 15 games. I would expect it would be better than switching every match

Glover started 6 league matches, Dieng was on the bench for a couple of those. That’s hardly half a season. And he kept three clean sheets

I think you’re overestimating what Lenihan would’ve brought to this team tbh. He was as exposed at the start of last season as the defenders who’ve played this one have been. Our style leaves them wide open and there to be shot at. I agree he’s decent, a good leader, but let’s not pretend he’s the difference maker. And as I say, they’ve had more than 18 months to replace him and haven’t.

He’s experienced, a leader and puts his head in, which is exactly what fans have been calling for. He’s not prem class but he’s a proven top class champo player. As a lad that started as a defensive midfielder, he’s also very comfortable on the ball which is important to how we play. He also prefers the left side and is miles better than Clarke and Edmundson in that role as a ball playing CB.

I’m not one of those that like to inflate a missing players worth…but he was captain for a reason and missing your captain has a psychological impact and organisational impact too

I wouldn’t disagree with much of that in terms of his qualities, I do think he would be very exposed in this team though. It does really surprise me that nobody has been signed to take his place, if he’s such a vital component it makes what we’ve done in the market even more bizarre imo.

I think they should have signed someone, unless he’s due back soon

I think they must think he’s going to be back. They aren’t stupid. I hope. But if he came back this month or early next, then it would start to make more sense.
He’ll surely need a mini pre-season too. So even if he was “on the grass” tomorrow he couldn’t play until March realistically

I wonder if he is training though. It was interesting that the Gazette went with a piece on him last week. Sort of priming us for an impending return. Actually given how close to his chest Carrick keeps his cards, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him on the bench in the next 2-3 weeks.

You lot are so miserable
Haha, I know I know.

I also do appreciate the angle you put on our situation this season. There is definitely some compelling evidence to suggest why we are where we are. Especially when you look at the number of defensive combinations we have had this season, I mean that’s insane and paints a picture.

I think the frustration also grows because we have kind of proven that we can compete with the likes of Burnley and Sheff Utd on our day, and to a lesser extend even Leeds if you factor in the cup win where we were incredible. However we find ourselves so far adrift through pretty much our own doing because, even with the defensive changes, professional footballers shouldn’t be making the kind of mistakes they are so frequently.
