What would you class as a successful season under Warnock?

Fans demand success

People are saying success would be playoffs at least

I don’t see how both aren’t intertwined

Well from my point of view it's easy to differentiate.
I'd comsider play offs a success.
Do I demand it? - No.

Success and what you consider a realistic/reasonbable outcome aren't necessarily the same thing

Think our definitions are aligned differently which is fair enough. Next part is not aimed at you but more generic about the posts I’ve seen on this thread

But the tone of some of the posts read as expectations for the season, and that we should expect the playoff as a minimum

People who set expectations at that height from the start which is unrealistic to expect it (not unrealistic finishing point).

These people will be bemoaning our position at the first chance they get. Seen it multiple time’s before

I've went for top 10 as a success.

Given Warnock's 8 game spell would have us in 8th, with a depleted and disjointed squad, I don't think it's a particularly unrealistic assessment of what I would consider a successful season.

I don't think finishing 14th would be a success, so I'm not going to say it is.
Doesn't mean we won't finish there, but I think anyone calling that successful is bizarre.

As things are top 10 acceptable, top 6 would be a cracking season. Though depends on investment, signings and who if any we sell from the first team.

Start of the season - midtable
End of the season - top of the table, top goalscorers, every goal scored must have A MINIMUM of 20 passes before a shot is taken, with this squad he should have had the title wrapped up weeks ago etc.

I tend to be slightly pessimistic most seasons, but I do think a top 6 finish is realistic. I said 14th last season as the basis of inexperienced managerial team with significantly reduced resources.

The division is going to be slightly weaker next season and Warnock has been getting 1.5points per game out of a side that will be strengthened. If there was no money available he would not be here. First rule for a potential manager is only sign for club that has a reasonable budget for the season ahead.

We have a manager with lots of success at Championship level - he has experienced colleagues who he has worked with for a number of years. We are one of the better resourced teams in the Championship (certainly in terms of facilities) and capable of regular crowds of 25k and we finished on a high.

I like this quote that Steve Gibson made today about NW:

"He's busy already," Boro chairman Steve Gibson told BBC Look North. "He said he was going to take a week off down in Cornwall and switch his phone off - and I wish he had, because he's been on the phone to me every 10 minutes."

NW is keen and ambitious.

Unrealistic demands of playoffs settling in early from the fans

Won’t be long before the Warnock out threads are started based on this expectations

I don’t demand it or expect it. But I think we could achieve it. I wouldn’t turn on Warnock though, been cheer-leading for his appointment for at least 5 years, unless it was mathematically impossible for us to stay in the division. Won’t happen. 😬

Agree with this and as much as I am pleased NW will be with us next season - it isn't really a long term solution. That is why (on another thread) I was suggesting a Nigel Pearson type appointment would make sense.

Warnock could be here 2-3 years, Pearson 3-4 tops? Managers just don’t stay longer these days. So what’s the difference?

Ref: the livespan of a Championship manager

At a guess I would say most left their jobs last season so looking more than 12 months ahead is often academic. Sad to say.

Sorry. I thought he had penned a one year contract. My mistake!

No idea what his contract is. But a 12 month deal doesn’t mean he won’t stay longer than 12 months, especially if he takes us up. Contracts are a negotiation tool, they very rarely directly correlate with the length of time someone stays at a club.

I mean for players, clubs are normally doing their best to get shot of them a year before their contract ends!

Why are people being so quick to dismiss the three relegated teams, they’re all better than us.
A 50% win ratio is a good starting point, especially when they’re all away.
I’m sure NW’s age is a big factor in only taking a one year contract. I’m sure like most loving wives his Mrs said something like “ I know you, don’t be getting carried away and signing long contracts”!

Home form.
You have to entertain your own fans ( hopefully we’ll be back in soon)

no home wins this year is terrible.

goals.
Players knowing their role
Enjoying it again.

It depends on how reasonable people are I suppose. Preseason is more enjoyable when you have some optimism though (although that was impossible before last season)

For me, a non-relegation threatened season. That's progress. I hope he makes some astute signings, gives Gibson some direction for the next few seasons and we start getting some team identity back. Not much to ask :)

1. The squad re-balanced
2. Young players such as Coulson, Spence, Tavernier given a minimum of 30 starts each
3. Players improving technically, physically and tactically
4. Exciting, attacking football, I don’t want 85% possession a la Man City but neither do I want 25% possession and ground out 1-0 wins. 3-2 is far better (most of the time)
5. Players playing in their proper position
6. An acquisition strategy based upon the long term unlike the Monk and Pulis waste.
7. More young players brought through from the academy.
8. Ayala signing for BournemoUtah, first game of season versus us, sent off after a minute, 3 game ban
9. A well thought out transition to the manager for the season after, articulated and communicated to the fans in advance evidencing how the club is implementing a long term vision for the club
10. Leeds, Sunderland, West Ham, Palace and Bournemouth to be relegated.
