What was a visit to the dentist like back in the old days?

Moore in South Bank traumatised me for a long time when I was around 11 (1971), could not get me near a Dentist till I was in my 20s, when I had to find one, probably due to not having check ups for 14 year, Mr Hussain (at that time on Eston High Street) was brilliant, saved the tooth and over several appointments put me at ease. Now (in normal circumstances) see hygienist every 3 - 4 month no worries what so ever.

I had an abscess and the dentist tried to give me a local anaesthetic. It didn't work because he was injecting it into the abscess, so rather than put me on antibiotics to clear it up he kept injecting into the same spot with the same non result. Eventually he just pulled it out without an effective anaesthetic. This was 2 years ago and it was as a private patient. Told me to to take ibuprofen if it was sore. Worst experience I've ever had in the chair.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth out at James Cook Hospital about 5 years ago - honestly the tools they used were from B&Q

I had a molar pulled out Earlier this year before Covid as it had an abscess and it had bulbous roots. I thought he was going to break my jaw getting it out, it was the size of a shotgun cartridge and over an inch long. The dentist was very pleased with it and said he was keeping it in his collection! Definitely something of the sadist in that profession.

Gas...South Bank - a building with a green door and pillars...awoke to a mouth full of blood, was sick, couldn't get on the bus home, my poor mum had to walk me so far to a phone box to get collected, had a bucket in back seat, vomited for hours even when home. Had a laceration on my inner bottom lip.

Mum would never go back there, said he was a butcher and that was strong for her.

Sometimes still have a nightmare that includes it <shudders>

I have to say the dentist (in South Bank) I went to as a kid was excellent which is why I've nevered been bothered by going I guess. However my dad always prefixed the names of the old dentists he'd had back in the day with the epithet 'butcher' (barbers were always the mad axeman).

Butcher Brown's on Parly Rd, same as other posts, given gas to get three teeth out, woke up in the waiting room throwing blood up( much to the horror of the other kids waiting to be seen) they ended up removing seven.

On Normanby Road? Just along from the Oak Leaf? Maybe on the junction with Cromwell Road?

Mr Daniels in Doggy was always apologetic but still took them out under gas. Like many others on here I awoke in a daze to be packed off home with a scarf around my mouth, with instructions to my mother to make sure I had a hot drink immediately.
I'm still nervous 50 years later and my children have been shown the metal (occlusal amalgam?) fillings. This is what happens if you don't look after your teeth!

Mr Daniels used to be on Roman Road too. I believe he had a stroke or something late 70s and was off for ages... I think he managed to go back to work. He was replaced at that time by a bloke called Mr Neville who was an absolute ärsêhole. He filled every tooth in my head regardless if it needed one. Told you to shut up if he'd hurt you. Mr Dredge was the other dentist who worked there with the aforementioned Sumerville Woodiwiss. If you've seen Marathon Man, Woodiwiss looked like Der Weiße Engel.

When I was in my early / mid teens (1970s) my dentist was my mate's Dad. TBF he was OK but the clever bit was that his assistant was his daughter / my mate's sister who was a few years older and absolutely drop dead gorgeous - no self respecting teen lad was going to show fear / pain in front of her

yeah, but he used to fiddle with you when you were under the gas.
