What is the point of having a garage

Does anybody actually use their garage to park their car anymore?

My niece is concerned that the house she's about to buy (first timer) hasn't got a garage for her car.

We converted ours into a store room/workshop years ago. Now it just houses stuff you'd otherwise put in the shed.

I use mine as a cinema room with a massive projector. In truth I get a lot of use out of it (except in winter).

The majority of new builds with garages hardly fit a car in. You can just about open one side door.

I would love one. I agree though it's to stick all my cr*p in or maybe put a treadmill or rower.

thats not just the fault of house builders, people just used to have smaller cars but have gravitated towards larger cars now

have to admit I wouldn’t like a house without one

a shed just doesn’t offer the same flexibility nor house value impact; we keep all sorts in ours - pizza ovens, bbqs, 3 lawn mowers, scarifier; spare patio furniture, grass seed, fertiliser, bikes, weed killer, car stuff etc as well as power tools and general stuff and a place to keep recycling out of the way

we’ve got a double detached garage and I’ve seen some houses nearby where they’ve done build work to combine house and garage and built extra rooms, gym etc so it gives you options

my last house didn’t have a garage and the loft and shed were like a late stage game of Tetris

As part of my job I visited thousands of houses and often went into their garages. It was quite rare to actually see a car housed in one or enough space to put one.
Usually the response of the householder was , sorry about the mess as you clambered around!

Ah yeah I've got one of them in it as well.

I have considered one day just turning it into an actual pub.

I hear ya. Our last house was a '4 bed' but one of the rooms was a tiny box room and the other a loft conversion, it had no garage. So basically it was a 2 up 2 down with a big kitchen, a box room, and a converted loft. We really needed a garage but there was literally no way of building one. Had to make do with a small garden shed and that was broken into.

I dream of a double garage. Then again I'd probably need 500k + down here in the south😂

I've heard differening reports as to whether converting a garage devalues the house what's the the deal. We have a single garage and it's full of stuff but no car

Mine is storage as the house has a low sloping roof. Could only store anything in the loft for a family of borrowers.

Most neighbours have also kept them for storage, but I noticed when looking to buy in our area that many had what looked like the cover-up of a murder: they were originally built in the early 1960s with the option of an inspection pit for your car!

We're just having an extension built, and part of that is removing the garage to open up the garden a bit more to compensate for what we're losing with the build. We're then going to add a paved area at back of garden and put a shed on there for bikes/tools/lawn mower.... the rest of the stuff in the garage is just stuff we don't need really.

Front half of mine is for tools and the motorbike.

back half is my home gym so very useful for me

I have a triple garage which is used as a workshop, gym, potting area, storage, making fishing rigs etc but never for the car.
